TITLE OF THE PROJECT:

The title of the project is “WEB ACCESS FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED”.

INTRODUCTION

The scope of the project “the vision for visually impaired is global”. A visually impaired is not
bound to any languages if he knows Basic English, this is sufficient for them to use the system in
an efficient way.

The system is intended not only for the visually impaired but can be used by normal
man/woman.

ANALYSIS OF PRESENT SYSTEM

Before we begin a new system it is important to study the system that will be improved or
replaced (if there is one). We need to analyze how this system uses hardware, software, network
and the people resources to convert data resources, such as transaction data, into information
products, such as

reports and displays. Thus we should document how the information system activities of input,
processing, output, storage and control are accomplished.

PROBLEM OF EXISTING SYSTEM

Visually impaired people are info-excluded due to the overwhelming task they face to read
information on the web. Indeed, unlike fully capacitated people, blind people cannot read
information by just scanning it quickly i.e. they cannot read in the “diagonal”. As a consequence,
they have to come through all sentences of web pages to understand if a document is interesting

or not (by BRAILLE MONITORS). This is obviously an overwhelming task which clearly
excludes visually impaired people to quick access to information. Today, this is one of the most
important challenges of our society to deal with the info-inclusion of visually impaired people.

CHARACTERSTICS OF THE PROPOSED SYSTEM

So, we clearly need to solve this problem which deeply limits web information access. In
particular, we aim at developing a wide range of technological solutions so that visually impaired
people can take advantage of the new ubiquitous technologies that are fast growing in our every
day lives. This project aims at tackling this challenging task by introducing on-line services like
Reading News on-line, Online Listening Music, On-Line Education Information, On-Line
Dictionary and Yellow pages

NEED OF THE PROPOSED SYSTEM

Although, a lot has been done for blind people to access information with Braille screens,
Braille keyboards, Braille PDA s and Text-to-speech interfaces, but very little has been made to
reduce the amount of information they have to deal with. But the important factor is that most
blind people do not have access to expensive adapted devices (mentioned above). This fact can
be seen as a society-exclusion problem. Indeed, only a small proportion of visually impaired
people have access to information.

For that purpose, we aim at proposing new human-computer interfaces that run on
classical devices such as classical PCs, Pocket PCs. As a consequence, blind people may have
access to affordable technology

FEASIBILITY ANALYSIS

2

Depending on the results of the initial investigation the survey is now expanded to a more
detailed feasibility study. “FEASIBILITY STUDY” is a test of system proposal according to its
workability, impact of the organization, ability to meet needs and effective use of the resources.
It focuses on these major questions:

1. What are the user’s demonstrable needs and how does a candidate system meet them?

2. What resources are available for given candidate system?

3. What are the likely impacts of the candidate system on the organization?

4. Whether it is worth to solve the problem?

During feasibility analysis for this project, following primary areas of interest are to be
considered. Investigation and generating ideas about a new system does this.

Steps in feasibility analysis

Eight steps involved in the feasibility analysis are:

_ Form a project team and appoint a project leader.

_ Prepare system flowcharts.

_ Enumerate potential proposed system.

_ Define and identify characteristics of proposed system.

_ Determine and evaluate performance and cost effective of each proposed system.

_ Weight system performance and cost data.

_ Select the best-proposed system.

_ Prepare and report final project directive to management.

Technical feasibility

A study of resource availability that may affect the ability to achieve an acceptable system. This
evaluation determines whether the technology needed for the proposed system is available or not.

• Can the work for the project be done with current equipment existing software technology &
available personal?

• Can the system be upgraded if developed?

• If new technology is needed then what can be developed?

This is concerned with specifying equipment and software that will successfully satisfy the user
requirement. The technical needs of the system may include:

Front-end and back-end selection

An important issue for the development of a project is the selection of suitable front-end and
back-end. When we decided to develop the project we went through an extensive study to
determine the most suitable platform that suits the needs of the organization as well as helps in
development of the project.

The aspects of our study included the following factors.

Front-end selection:

1. It must have a graphical user interface that assists users that are not from IT background.

2. Scalability and extensibility.

3. Flexibility.

4. Robustness.

5. According to the organization requirement and the culture.

4

6. Must provide excellent reporting features with good printing support.

7. Platform independent.

8. Easy to debug and maintain.

9. Event driven programming facility.

10. Front end must support some popular back end like Ms Access.

According to the above stated features we selected Visual Basic.NET and ASP.NET as the
front-end for developing our project.

Back-end Selection:

1. Multiple user support.

2. Efficient data handling.

3. Provide inherent features for security.

4. Efficient data retrieval and maintenance.

5. Stored procedures.

6. Popularity.

7. Operating System compatible.

8. Easy to install.

9. Various drivers must be available.

10. Easy to implant with the Front-end.

According to above stated features we selected SQL Server as the backend.

The technical feasibility is frequently the most difficult area encountered at this stage. It is
essential that the process of analysis and definition be conducted in parallel with an assessment
to technical feasibility. It centers on the existing computer system (hardware, software etc.) and
to what extent it can support the proposed system.

Economical feasibility

Economic justification is generally the “Bottom Line” consideration for most systems. Economic
justification includes a broad range of concerns that includes cost benefit analysis. In this we
weight the cost and the benefits associated with the candidate system and if it suits the basic
purpose of the organization i.e. profit making, the project is making to the analysis and design
phase.

The financial and the economic questions during the preliminary investigation are verified to
estimate the following:

• The cost to conduct a full system investigation.

• The cost of hardware and software for the class of application being considered.

• The benefits in the form of reduced cost.

• The proposed system will give the minute information, as a result the performance is improved
which in turn may be expected to provide increased profits.

• This feasibility checks whether the system can be developed with the available

funds.

The “Web Access for Visually Impaired” does not require enormous amount of money to be
developed. This can be done economically if planned judicially, so it is economically feasible.
The cost of project depends upon the number of man-hours required.

Operational Feasibility

It is mainly related to human organizations and political aspects. The points to be considered are:

• What changes will be brought with the system?

• What organization structures are disturbed?

• What new skills will be required? Do the existing staff members have these skills? If not, can
they be trained in due course of time?

The system is operationally feasible as it very easy for the End users to operate it. It

only needs basic information about Windows platform.

Schedule feasibility

Time evaluation is the most important consideration in the development of project. The time
schedule required for the developed of this project is very important since more development
time effect machine time, cost and cause delay in the development of other systems.

A reliable” Web Access for Visually Impaired” can be developed in the considerable amount

of time.

METHODOLOGY:

The Project is to design a website for visually impaired people so the methodology will
be using is ITERATIVE ENHANCEMENT MODEL.

CONCLUSION

As our project aims at providing the internet access the system can be globally utilized for the
visually challenged people all over the world.

The vision for visually impaired is a simple and efficient way of accessing the web using
various shortcut keys or key combination to traversed throughout the entire system. The system
is based on the existing standard that makes the system highly reliable and of improved quality.

The system provides great assistance to a visually impaired people to enjoy each and every
feature. However, the software is not only intended for visually impaired people but also for any
ordinary person who can simply use a mouse interface to traversed through the entire system.
