Critical Inquiry Question: What materials can we use to make a realistic birds nest?

Instructional Objectives:
Knowledge:

Students will understand that birds nest are constructed of specific parts
Students will understand that they can use materials, and utensils to decorate their works
of art in an appealing manner

Skill:

Students will be able to follow instructions and use materials provided to construct a
bird’s nest
Students will be able to use marks to provide aesthetically pleasing details to their
projects

Materials:

Paper shreds, coffee filter/paper plates, twigs, white eggs, markers, moss, pine cones,

Preparation:

Have materials sorted and prepared prior to class starting

Adaptations:

Allow students to work together if needed.


Allow students to use cardstock as the base if coffee filters are too fragile or hard to
manipulate
Lesson Procedure:

1. Gather students at carpet for instruction


2. Explain to students that our art project for the day is central to theme of Spring
- Review discovery time- and some the things we talked about and students
brought about spring
- Who wants to guess what we might be making today?
- Talk to a partner beside you of things you think of when you think of Spring
- Let some students share
3. Introduce activity- making birds nest
- What is a birds nest?
- What kinds of things do you think about when you think of a birds nest?
- What kinds of things do you think we see in a birds nest
- Show real birds nest picture- multiple with some craft/cartoon pictures
- What do we see? What kind of things do you think we need to have in our
birds nest?
4. Show exemplar that teacher made and explain components, and steps taken to
create the base nest
- Explain materials, and steps taken for construction of the nest
- Get students to follow along with steps using fingers as the instruction
progress
5. Explain to students that when they are done creating their nests they will be given
a white egg that the can decorate in whichever they choose
- Show examples
- Explain patterns and show examples
6. Send students back to their desks where teacher will distribute the materials
7. Work time
- Teacher will circulate around the classroom checking for understanding and
students who may need any assistance
- Teacher will ask students prompt questions
o What design are you using? Why did you choose this design?
o Why do you think a bird would like to live in your nest?
8. Clean up classroom at with 10 minutes left- expectation that all material will be
placed back into the bags and onto the horseshoe table
- Expert cleaners/ helpers will be given stickers or golden tickets
9. Leave bird’s nest on students desks for gallery walk of the work each student has
created
10. Transition into agendas

Student ability to create a bird’s nest that follows the instructions given by teacher
Student ability to add details to their eggs using patterns and creative designs
