Paula Shin IM-6/12AP 10/29/18 Summa Quarterly Review: This quarter, I worked on creating my own content for the Teen Health Matters website, a product of the Howard County Health Department. I researched the content on the website, as well as organizations similar to the Teen Health Matters website and took careful notes about the way that others wrote out their content to help me create content. My blog posts were focused on National Health Observances for October, and the topics that [ wrote about were domestic violence among teenage relationships and teen driver safety. I researched different organizations in which I obtained resources that I incorporated into my own informative blog posts and information that I tuned into an infographic. Also, I read an article about the dangers of teenage ing and how to combat it, using this information in my blog post about teen driver safety. Earlier, I participated in a health campaign focus group, in which the other interns and I had the opportunity to voice our opinions about a few posters that a marketing company had created for the health department's suicide prevention campaign. It intrigued me how the health department listened to the advice given from teenagers to help other adolescents in the county. Obstacle: What was difficult for me was anticipating how long each task would take. I would have a set schedule of when to work and complete my tasks, but then a task, such as researching information for a blog post, took longer than expected, pushing back my plans for when it would. be finished. Another obstacle that I faced was directly transitioning from school to focusing on site, I found myself losing attention from the task at hand, and towards other assignments that were not of my priority, but eventually, by setting goals and establishing a better work ethic, I was always able to stay alert. Goal: In the future, I hope to keep learning from other people and from online resources about how to improve or implement programs about disseminating health information to teenagers. I also hope to improve my time management. Knowing which assignments take me the longest to accomplish will help me plan accordingly for future assignments. In addition, I hope to be more productive with my work ethic and be able to maintain it throughout my senior year of high school. 0 Mentor Signature: ana Date:_1° 2s /| 9 IMV/6/12AP Summary Journal Paula Shin Intern/Mentor 1 2018-2019 2nd Marking Period On Site Summary: During the second marking period, I continued to write blog posts and officially began the planning process for the mental health awareness campaign. For the blog post, I created one about the health effects of giving during the holiday season and advised people to give back, both materialistically and with volunteer work. The main part of my duties on site was to complete tasks for the mental health campaign. From meetings to creating content, I was sure to stay busy. Starting from the beginning of the quarter, I helped create a powerpoint for my mentor to introduce the health campaign at the HCASC (Howard County Association of Student Councils) meeting. My mentor, other interns and I held several meetings to discuss a variety of steps related to the mental health campaign, such as the tool kit and coming up with an entire plan on how to execute it. Towards the end of November, I began a potential flyer for the health campaign but ended up creating one with a different format. In the midst of getting the flyer approved and making necessary changes, two other interns and I worked to create a proposal for the campaign. We composed an email to the Executive Director of Program Innovation and Student Well-being in Howard County, in order to gain approval for the project. After this, I had a meeting with the principal to gain approval for the mental health campaign. The meeting was successful; the principal seemed very approving of the campaign and even gave feedback on how wwe could expand the campaign. Back in first quarter, introduced a vague idea of what my research topic would be, but recently, I met with my mentor to discuss my research topic in greater detail, with more specifics than last time, which helped me make major breakthroughs in my research. Also, I recently began observing patients, taking note of everything a patient did, especially keeping track of how long patients were alone. Obstacles: ‘An obstacle that I continued to face was directly transitioning from school to focusing on site. I would lose my focus on the task at hand, but by working in realistic chunks of work and with the help of my mentor, I was able to stay more alert. Looking Forward To: Continuing to plan the mental health campaign Recruiting students and holding training sessions Continue observing patients in the clinic Shadowing employees at the Health Department who specialize in different departments and learning about what they do Mentor Signature: IMI/6/12AP Summary Journal Paula Shin Intern/Mentor I 2018-2019 3rd Marking Perio ‘On Site Summary: This quarter, I continued to write blog posts, but starting in January, I was given a monthly topic to write about. For the month of February, I was given the task of writing a blog post for Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Not only do I get to learn about the topics that are specifically assigned to me, I get to spread my knowledge by posting it on the Teen Health Matters website. I also created a few social media posts to go along with the blog post. In addition, I was assigned to write the drugs section in the “Drugs & Alcohol” section on the THM website. In preparation for the post, I was able to learn important information about the different types of drugs out there and learn the best ways to prevent them. For the month of March, I wrote a blog post about the symptoms and causes for depression and how to seek out help for it. ‘A major task I did while on site was officially beginning to create items for the mental health campaign. Last month, the other interns and I created an assembly line creating the toolkits for the student ambassadors, which included fact sheets about certain mental disorders (anxiety, depression and how to manage stress), the youth suicide prevention posters that I was able to give my input on, arid pamphlets that have numbers for helplines. A few weeks later, I included these folders, t-shirts, a sticker, pencil, and a stress ball into bags provided by the health department. These bags were handed out at the student ambassador training session, which occurred at the Miller Branch Library a few weeks ago. For this training session, I recruited a few student ambassadors from the Independent Research class whose topics were similar to youth mental health and two people were willing to become ambassadors. The training session ‘was extremely informative; it was a friendly environment for the ambassadors to speak about common mental health issues and we practiced how to hold a caring conversation with one another. I am excited to begin the campaign activities at my school, such as creating morning announcements, hosting the display table, and creating social media messages. Because I hope to extend this opportunity to students outside of our school, I hope to encourage students at other schools to host an event in the upcoming years by presenting at the Student Learning Conference. Also, if I live nearby in the fall, I hope to attend the BHA Annual Suicide Prevention Conference and talk about my experiences. Obstacles: ‘An obstacle that I continued to face was directly transitioning from school to focusing on site. I would lose my focus on the task at hand, but by working in realistic chunks of work and with the help of my mentor, I was able to stay more alert.
