Walmart Inc.

is an American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of

hypermarkets, discount department stores and grocery stores. It has about 11277 stores and clubs
in 27 countries (operating under 55 different names). Walmart has maintained its position as the
number one retail store due to its ability to adapt to the changing business climate. It has
introduced certain features and services which its competitors have failed to incorporate.

As their Mission Statement states, “Save money. Live better”, Walmart offers products to
customers at low prices with an aim of achieving volume sales at a reduced profit margin. Thus,
the target market of Walmart includes people who are living below the poverty line, people on
public assistance, people just above the poverty line, people who would be considered the low
end of the middle-class, those who are actually middle-class and the upper range of middle-class.
Though they also have customers who have higher income than upper middle-class.

The possible competitors for Walmart in Pakistan would be Carrefour (Hyperstar), Metro, Makro
and CSD. In addition to these, a great majority in Pakistan has the habit of buying grocery on a
daily basis from local stores, especially people who receive daily wages. Thus, it would be a
challenge for Walmart to convince the people to change their purchasing habits.
