Exercise 7.1 – Add a Comfort Panel HMI to the Project and Configure the PLC
Connection
The final component of our project will be the addition of a TP700 Comfort Panel.

In this exercise, we’ll add the HMI panel and configure the data connection to the

PLC.

Add a TP700 Comfort Panel to the Project

Procedure
1. Make sure the software is not online (indicated by orange) with any device.
From the Project tree, double click on the “Add new device” entry. When the
Add new device dialog opens, select the HMI device button.
2. Accept the default device name of HMI_1.
3. Expand the branch labeled “SIMATIC Comfort Panel”. From the list that
appears, select “7” display”, then TP700 Comfort, then the actual device.
4. Verify the device version is 14.0.0.0.
5. UNCHECK “Start device wizard”.
6. Click OK to add the device to the Project.

Define the Data Connection to the S7-1500 PLC

Procedure
1. Open the Devices and networks editor and select the “Network view” tab.
2. Select the Ethernet port of the Comfort Panel. In the Inspector window
under “Properties”, set the IP address of the Comfort Panel to 192.168.0.7
with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. It is not necessary to connect it to a
project subnet at this time.
3. In the upper left hand corner of the editor, select the “Connections”
button to change to the Connection view and editor.
4. From the pulldown next to the Connection button, verify that the selection
“HMI connection” is displayed.
5. Note that the editor highlights all viable communications partners for the HMI
connection – the Comfort Panel and both PLCs in the project.
6. Using “drag and drop”, connect the Ethernet port of the Comfort Panel to the
right hand port of the S7-1500. Select PN/IE_1 as the subnet to connect

7. Note the highlighted connection showing the defined connection between

the Comfort Panel and the S7-1500. Save the project.

NOTE
The drag and drop operation actually completed several operations in a single
step. It added the HMI to the subnet, assigned it an available IP address in the
correct subnet of the project, and created a defined data connection in the HMI
for the S7-1500, enabling the browsing of tags. A connection can also be
defined by dragging a PLC tag from anywhere in the application program and
dropping it on to any HMI screen. This operation will create the connection,
connect the HMI to the proper subnet, assign an appropriate IP address, and
create an HMI tag all in one step.
