THE 5 PASSES OF PHRASING: DIALS

1st: DIVIDE

Divide the passage into


phrases.
When the phrase is in the
middle of another phrase
you will need to extract it.

2nd: INDENT

Indent the subordinate


phrases.
The main phrase is set to
the left, and subordinate
phrases are indented from
the phrase they modify.

3rd: ARROWS

Draw arrows to relate



the phrases.
Blue - Genitive phrases.
Green - Relative phrases.
Yellow - All other subordinate phrases.

4th: LABEL

Label the relationships 



between the phrases 

connected with yellow 

and blue arrows.

5th: SAVOR You also may include dot


notes, format the text, set
aside portions in rectangles,
Wrap your mind and heart around the passage. divide the text into sections,
Let the text influence your head, heart, and hands. and indicate headings for the
sections.
