EDITOR

Definition:-
According to law the editor of a news paper is
“Editor means the person who controls the selection of matter,
that is published in a news paper”

According to the Government of India the functions of an editor


have been defined almost on the same line,
“Editor means a person who directs and supervises the editorial
side of the news paper.”

Duties:-

From the above definitions we get an idea about who and what
an editor is, the editor basically looks after the editorial side of
the news paper.
The news editor is personally liable as to what is being printed or
published in the newspaper. According to law the news editor or
the editor cannot give any lame excuses about the print of any
inconvenient matter in the paper.
The prime duty of the editor is to see that all the departments are
Working in a systematic manner or not. The main motive of the editor
is to make all the departments of a newspaper house work in a
systematic way, to increase the revenue of the newspaper from the
advertisement department, which depends on the proper circulation of
the paper. The editor should be a senior and experienced journalist who
is liable to make the newspaper house function better.

We judge a newspaper by its editorial frame, which is decided by the


editor . The editor in the editorial conference, decides the types for
the proper designing of the paper. The editor a;lso keeps in mind that
his decision is fully followed by the departments.
Another main role of the editor is to write the editorial . The editorial
decides the standard of the newspaper. The editorial is written on recent
or current topics which usually involve political or social issues.The
editorial is read by a very small percentage of readers , who themselves
are very experienced about the news and also has an eagerness to know
more reguarding a particular news. Sometimes the editorial is also
written by the assistant editor ,in such cases the editor gives all the
guide lines as to how the editorial page is to be written, maintaining
the standard of the newspaper.
In the pre- independent era , the newspapers were owned by the editor
itself. For eg: Mahatma Gandhi, Rammohan roy, etc. But in the recent
times when the newspaper houses have also become business
organizations the editorial freedom has lost its base. Unlike the pre-
Independence times the editors are not free to write anything or
everything in the newspapers, the editor now being an employ himself
Has to work according to the policies of the newspaper house.
