SAC Entrepreneuriat lcole-des-Curs-Vaillants, cole communautaire entrepreneuriale (CE)

1) Category:
General program

2) Issues Behind the Program:

For several decades, dropping out, poverty and unequal opportunity have been major social problems. The gaps in terms of education in entrepreneurship in school has adverse effects on communities and regions, namely, dependence on jobs provided by mid-size and major companies and public-sector jobs on every level, and the exodus of human capital towards other communities or societies (brain-drain). Steeped in this culture of dependence, these populations frequently have trouble managing a viable economy that would make their community healthy, sustainable and self-sufficient. Schools should enable students to achieve, to take control of their potential, and to be entrepreneurial and innovative within their community and society at large in a conscious, responsible and independent manner.

3) Objectives:
Create a development-inducing alliance between the school and the community by aiming for genuine sharing of the responsibility to educate. Counter dropping out, poverty and inequality of opportunity. Act so that each child has a healthy, balanced and happy life on the educational, social, cultural and economic level. Establish a culture of conscious entrepreneurship at the service of the overall health of the children, partners and communities. Foster the sustainable development of each of the communities and regions and of society as a whole.

4) Environment:
Primary schools

5) Target Group:
Students from 5 to 12 years old Community

7) Description:
SAC Entrepreneuriat (sport-arts-culture), unique in Qubec, is the original way in which cole-des-Curs-Vaillants carries out its mission as an entrepreneurial community school, namely, to instil the idea of conscious entrepreneurship at the service of the overall health of each child as soon as children start school. This program is guided by the theme L'enfant, au cur de ses projets, s'engage et s'panouit dans ses apprentissages, which is centered on the student and his/her synergy with the teacher and the other partners. It is a four-in-one program which enables students to acquire conscious entrepreneurship values, strengths and abilities through sports, arts, culture and entrepreneurship education from Kindergarten to Grade 6. This specialized program focuses first and foremost on the student and the teacher, thereby enabling them to engage in activities consistent with their interests and that dovetail with the Qubec Education Program. The program hinges on the involvement of as many people as possible from various sectors of activity of the community and with diverse skills. Their common goal is to make every child happy to come to school to Learn and to Be Proactive. Open seven days a week, cole-des-Curs-Vaillants has become a place where the community gathers. Stimulating and dynamic, it offers a vast array of school and extracurricular activities through an original organizational formatan la carte program (PAC) for children (during and after class), families and the community (evenings and weekends).

8) Steps:

9) Activities/Actions:
SAC Entrepreneuriat proposes innovative approaches on the pedagogical, educational and community front. These approaches are powerful motivators for the children and respond adequately to the needs of children with learning or behavioral difficulties. o Guidance-oriented la carte pedagogical format: The children choose integrated options in class, in childcare services and as part of the la carte program. This empowers them to identify their interests and to better define and acquire their own values, strengths and abilities. Pedagogical support: The Comptences Plus system offers a number of individualized services to assist children with learning difficulties (help with homework assignments, help with reading, occupational therapy, weekend classes). Tutoring in reading: This integrated approach to learning consists of Cycle 3 students helping Cycle 1 students. Microbusinesses in the school:

see to it that the neighborhood is a stimulating living environment (organization of community activities, facilities, etc.).

12) Scientific Basis or Validity:

The Partenariat en formation: cole-Communaut (PFC) concept is inspired in part by the community school centers established some 15 years ago in Acadia and francophone communities outside Qubec. The concept has undergone continuous improvement over the years, based on pilot projects in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Qubec. Along the way, the concept was fine-tuned through a university graduate study at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). In 2010, researcher and doctoral candidate Matthias Ppin published a dissertation on the microbusinesses of CE Cur-Vaillant (Pepin, M. (2010). Culture entrepreneuriale et ducation : un regard ethnographique sur ce qui se vit l'cole primaire. Sarrebruck : Les ditions Universitaires Europennes.). [in French only] o A scientific article by the same author on the development of entrepreneurship in school is available at: http://www.cjnse-rcjce.ca/ojs2/index.php/cjnse/article/view/143/97. This program has existed for roughly a decade at cole-des-Curs-Vaillants. An informal evaluation of its impact was carried out from 1999 to 2004 (http://pedagogie.csdecou.qc.ca/des-coeurs-vaillants/upload/fichiers/Statistiques %201999-2005%20vfinale%204.doc [in French only]), showing that a number of changes came about within the school: o o There was vast improvement in communication between school personnel, parents, school childcare workers and the community and in the climate at school. Since 2004, registration has increased by 30%, with some 100 students opting for Cur-Vaillant because of the program or the reputation of the school. Parents confirm that their children attend the school for these reasons. Since 2002, there has been a sizeable decrease in delinquency, especially in Cycle 3 students, a phenomenon rarely witnessed before. For allophone children (38 % of the student body), this favorable climate speeds up the process of integration within Qubec culture and acquisition of French and other subjects. Gifted children are offered challenges that match their talents. They are given regular opportunities to assume greater responsibility and to deepen their skills through specialized options ( la carte program) and rotating options per cycle, within classrooms or the microbusinesses.

Additional information is available on the portals of the community schools of New Brunswick (general guide, framework document, support document, videos, etc.). However, a password is needed. Schools wishing to introduce the program may request a password at: http://www.gnb.ca/0000/index-e.asp.

14) Additional Information:

Given that introducing the program is a rigorous process that demands sustained support, it is crucial that Rino Lvesque and his team mentor any school wishing to implement CE components. UNESCO has recognized the concept of the entrepreneurial community school as a model to export to the world. The concept of the entrepreneurial community school is the structural and practical foundation for sweeping changes to education in New Brunswick. This reform is being carried out one school and one community at a time on a voluntary basis. In May 2010, more than 40% of francophone schools in New Brunswick were resolutely engaged in the process. Paul Inchausp, Chair of the Task Force on Curriculum Reform, has said that the program is a shining example of how to implement the reform in spirit and in practice. cole-des-Curs-Vaillants has received numerous awards from a variety of organizations, such as the Fdration des commissions scolaires du Qubec, the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and the Rseau qubcois des coles microentreprises environnementales.
