Problem 4
Higher strength steel has lower ductility; therefore, it allows for less yielding of the reinforcement
before failure, one of the most important arguments for the use of prestressed concrete in regards
to safety. Prestressed concrete can take a much higher moment before cracking when compared to
reinforced concrete, while allowing the engineer to create smaller sections, since the required
reinforcing area is smaller.
Moreover, concrete standards that we have today are not sufficient for the use of higher strength
steel; since the properties required are not good enough to support such material. At the same time,
the only way to increase such ductility is to increase the concrete strength.

Problem 5
It would be preferable to use a large number of small tendons when the area requirements are
unconstrained, since it allows for the use of more, cheaper components while not worrying much
about the total area occupied by them. On the other hand, if there is an area constraint to be
considered, it would be better to use a lower number of large tendons, since they would
longitudinally occupy less space, while still having the same resistance. Another important

consideration is that grouting may be affected depending on the existing separation between the
tendons.
