CIV 1264 – Homework 1

David Magarici – January 17th, 2019

Problem 3
Seven Wire Strands are anchored utilizing different techniques, such as the Plate Anchorage,
Multiplane Anchorage, Flat Anchorage and others. With these systems, the tendons are allowed to
separate from each other, and the system, in such an effective way that allows them to be inserted
even after the casting of the concrete. Additionally, seven wire strands can be coupled using
couplers to lengthen the tendons if a longer length is necessary. For reinforcing bars, they are more
durable than wire strands, and are primarily used for grouted construction. Moreover, the use is
simplified by utilizing plastic pocket formers to place the bars in the construction.
Depending on the use of the steel, one may choice a different type of steel. For simpler applications
that require a quick construction, a reinforcing bar is recommended; while seven wire strands are
recommended if the length of the strands must be extended depending on the length of the span.

Problem 4
Higher strength steel has lower ductility; therefore, it allows for less yielding of the reinforcement
before failure, one of the most important arguments for the use of prestressed concrete in regards
to safety. Prestressed concrete can take a much higher moment before cracking when compared to
reinforced concrete, while allowing the engineer to create smaller sections, since the required
reinforcing area is smaller.
Moreover, concrete standards that we have today are not sufficient for the use of higher strength
steel; since the properties required are not good enough to support such material. At the same time,
the only way to increase such ductility is to increase the concrete strength.

Problem 5
It would be preferable to use a large number of small tendons when the area requirements are
unconstrained, since it allows for the use of more, cheaper components while not worrying much
about the total area occupied by them. On the other hand, if there is an area constraint to be
considered, it would be better to use a lower number of large tendons, since they would
longitudinally occupy less space, while still having the same resistance. Another important

consideration is that grouting may be affected depending on the existing separation between the
tendons.
