ASSOCIATION OF HYSTOLOGY SUBTYPES AND PROGNOSIS OF ADVANCED STAGES NON-SMALL

CELL LUNG CANCER PATIENTS RECEIVING CHEMOTHERAPY IN INDONESIA

ABSTRACT
Background This study aims to determine the association of histology subtypes and prognosis of
advanced stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients receiving chemotherapy in Indonesia. We
also evaluated the role of gender, age, body mass index, staging, and performance status in
determining prognosis.
Material and Methods This was a retrospective cohort study analyzing a total of 60 patients of
advanced stages NSCLC treated with chemotherapy. Inclusion criteria were patient with histologically-
proven stage IIIB or stage IV NSCLC, on 18 years of age or older, and had good performance status.
The outcomes were the one-year mortality and the treatment response.
Result There were two histological subtypes among all subjects, adenocarcinoma (77.5%) and
squamous cell carcinoma (22.5%). During the one-year observation, 4 patients (6.7%) were deceased.
There was a higher proportion of mortality event in squamous cell carcinoma patients but it was not
statistically significant (p: 0.58). Underweight patients had a higher risk of death (RR: 1.09; 95% CI
1.00-1.19) and of progressive disease (RR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.12-1.51). In adenocarcinoma group, subjects
having metastasis had a higher risk of having progressive disease (RR: 1.35; 95%CI 1.09-1.66). In
squamous cell carcinoma patients, the female had a higher risk of progressive disease than male.
Conclusion Histology subtypes were not significantly associated with one-year mortality and disease
progression in advanced stages NSCLC. However, underweight patients had a higher risk of mortality
and having progressive disease.
