Self-Assessment Tool This  is  designed  to  be  used  in  conjunc0on  with  the  Behavioral  Table  of  Elements,  but  does  not  require  its  use  in  order  
to  be  effec0ve.  Following  an  interview,  traffic  stop,  interroga0on  or  field  interview,  use  the  checklist  to  measure  your  
observa0ons  and  take  notes  on  what  you  were  able  to  remember  and  no0ce  during  the  interac0on.  Each  benchmark  is  
labeled  for  notes,  observa0ons  and  elements  from  the  BToE  that  were  recognized.  This  enables  self  assessment,  
growth,  training  and  aEen0onal  sharpening.

Observa0on  Tips:  Keep  your  focus  on  the  overall  picture  and  pick  out  details  as  they  become  available  fo  your  observa0on.  Deliberately  seeking  out  small  peices  of  data  will  unavoidably  remove  your  focus  from  other  important  observable  areas  of  the  body.  
Fingernails  biEen,  chewed,  trimmed,  dirty  (observe  capillary  response  in  fingernails.  
Observe  clothing  wrinkling  and  shapes  of  pocketed  objects.  How  are  the  soles  of  the  shoes  word  down?  Are  both  shoes  0ed  the  same  way?  Is  there  presence  of  specific  dirt  or  trace  evidence  on  the  shoes?  Is  pet  hair  inside  of  the  laces?  Is  there  a  mark  from  a  
motorcycle  shiOer  knob?  
How  much  product  is  used  in  the  hair?  How  frequently  is  it  cut?    
Are  there  more  cuts  or  calluses  on  one  hand  than  the  other?  Is  some  of  the  hair  burned  or  removed  from  one  of  the  hands?  Is  one  hand  tanner  or  darker  than  the  other?  Is  the  back  of  the  neck  tanner  than  the  face?  
Overall  appearance  of  subject  and  vehicle  or  property:  How  does  the  subject  take  care  of  property  and  belongings?  Are  there  papers  or  printed  material  that  reveal  personality  traits?
