welcome
Welcome to the Department of Education
Each year, more than 600 students graduate from Roehampton having
successfully completed an award leading to Qualified Teaching Status.
They undertake a journey of discovery that opens their hearts and minds
to a value-based philosophy of education. The journey is emotional, physically
and intellectually demanding and, for the right person, well worth undertaking.
We offer an undergraduate course, postgraduate courses with M-level credits,
a professional (graduate) certificate, and full- and part-time routes, to meet
the needs of all applicants. Students join us straight from sixth form, following
completion of a first degree, as career changers looking for new direction or
after raising a family.

Whichever pathway you choose, you can be confident in our commitment to

excellence in teaching and research, which is responsive to policy initiatives
and which provides a positive learning experience. We combine support
and challenge to deliver high-quality professional initial teacher education
that prepares students to become outstanding classroom teachers.
Students on our programmes reflect the diversity of communities found
in Greater London schools, with which we have strong partnerships.
Our students have in common a passion for teaching and learning and
an aspiration to change lives. We build on that passion and encourage
them to teach their subject specialism in stimulating ways.

Learning to teach is demanding and is only the beginning of a teacher’s

professional development. It is also rewarding and enjoyable. I hope you
feel inspired to join the community of teachers who have begun their
careers here at Roehampton.
