LANGUAGE ARTS
Missing You Encourage your child to become a pen pal with someone he or she won't see for a few
months. Writing letters and post cards will sharpen your child's writing, spelling, and reading skills.
Winning Words Play synonym games with your child. Synonyms are words with similar meanings. One
player says a word, and then the other players say as many synonyms as they can. For instance, one player
could say "hot." The other players could then say "sizzling" and "burning."
MATH
My Number Give your child a card with a number written on it. Ask your child to think of as many questions
as possible with that number as the answer. Here are some questions for the number 7: How many dwarfs
lived with Snow White? How many numbers are in a phone number? How many colors are in a rainbow?
Fraction Walk Take a walk to help your child understand that fractions are everywhere. If a house has three
windows facing the street, each window is one-third of the whole set of windows. Encourage your child
to notice other parts in a whole, such as the posts of a fence or the cars in a parking lot.
SCIENCE
Moon Chart Talk with your child about the different phases of the moon. Encourage him or her to observe
themoon and record its phases in a Moon Chart.
Seed Collection Help your child collect and save seeds, such as beans, pumpkin seeds, or popcorn. Let
the seeds dry, glue them to cardboard, and label them. Your child may decide to plant some of the seeds
before they are glued to see what kind of plant grows.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Road Trip Places that are familiar to adults can fascinate a child. Take trips to local airports, antique
stores, and ethnic restaurants to help your child develop an awareness of the world.
Name Game While you are traveling, point out the names of geographical sites or places. Names often
reflect the characteristics of a place. Will you need a warm jacket in Frostproof, Florida? Ask your child to
relate the natural features of a place to its name.
