Business English:

The Business English module allows students to acquire knowledge of the language skills necessary to succeed in business.
The materials used are designed to practise the English language in a variety of contexts, including describing products and markets,
conducting meetings and negotiations. Classroom exercises, including case studies and role-plays, allow students the opportunity to
develop their confidence in an international business English context.

IELTS preparation

Students will receive a comprehensive introduction to the four parts of the Cambridge International English Language Testing
System (IELTS) for University entrance, in which learners’ key skills of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking are explored using
authentic IELTS materials. Students gain confidence in communicating in both oral and written contexts, including extended
speaking on course topics and how to engage in discourse, as well as describing factual information and processes. The skills of
reading for gist, skimming, scanning and gleaning meaning from context are practised, and listening skills are improved through
exposure to authentic material.

Conversational Fluency:

Developing the confidence to interact with tutors and peers, and to participate fully in seminars and lectures, is the focus of this
part of the course. Fluency is developed through 1-1 and group exercises with a strong emphasis on pronunciation.
Audio-visual material and lectures offer exposure to a variety of spoken English media. Students are also offered tuition on
improving academic and professional life.

Reading and Writing for Business Studies

This part of the Business English course is designed specifically to help students with their business studies assignments,
utilising a variety of reading texts taken from authentic academic and business sources and offering students the business
vocabulary necessary to produce successful assignments. Tuition is given on how to structure and produce business essays
and reports for a variety of business studies topics.

Pathways

A part of our international English courses the English Language for Academic Study courses are designed to provide
international students with the language and skills needed in order to be successful in a number of Oxford Business College
courses as well as for further and higher education courses. Our Business English courses here at Oxford aim to develop a
students’ level of general English language, while also providing skills such as the planning and writing of academic texts,
understanding lectures and note taking and the preparation and presentation of seminars. The length of time a student

Course Content

English for Academic Purposes:

You will develop all the skills needed to use English in an appropriate way in preparation for university or college. You will improve in
all areas — reading, writing, speaking and listening — to ensure you are prepared for life in your chosen university or college.
Important skills such as creating and giving formal presentations, writing essays, summarizing, critiquing academic texts and far
more, will be yours.

English for Aviation Purposes:

It is a prerequisite that all flight crew members and air traffic controllers responsible for international flights effectively demonstrate
their competence in the English Language. This is a legal requirement imposed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
Both pilots and air traffic controllers are required to sit a test which demonstrates ‘Operational Level 4. This test is based solely on
listening and speaking skills. Oxford Business College’s English for Aviation purposes offers students the opportunity to train in and
practice both their listening and speaking skills.
Oxford Business College can administer the ELPAC test on site.

English for Engineering Purposes:

Oxford Business College’s English for Engineering purposes provides students with the English language proficiency to
describe some of the various processes involved in Engineering, how to follow precise instructions, whether positive or
negative. The course also aids students with the tools for discussing and defending their projects and those decisions made in
determining the directions of these engineering projects.

English for Legal Purposes:

Students will have the opportunity to learn key law terminology referring to legal proceedings, court systems and perjury;
practise reading authentic case studies and contracts. English is the language of the common law that has often been
perceived as the root of many of the law-specific difficulties for Legal English learners. In addition to the difficulties inherent
in working with cases, common law contracts are clearly a potential source of difficulty for the Legal English learner.

English for Medical Purposes:

This course is for doctors, medical students in the clinical phase of their studies and other medical professionals who need to
use English in their work. It covers medical terminology, practice in specialist vocabulary and a review of
grammatical structures. In addition, Oxford Business College’s Medical English Course also extends to language to describe
health and safety requirements.
