CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION DR. EDUARDO LOPEZ

FROM ACCIDENT TO DESIGN

The importance of curriculum do not embeded on the subjects to be

taught. It is about the development of society in general. Learners are the
leaders of our present and future generation, and with this, the purpose of
curriculum is to enable learners to be successful, responsible individual and an
effective contributor to his/her society. It is also important to follow the
children’s passion and interestto motivate their curiousity to learn. This will
help them to be more active and productive and avoid being isolated in one
place.
Educators’ goal in developing curriculum was to give an extensive fccus
on what the students should learn and why do the students need these to be
learned. The 19th century educators used textbooks, classroom instructions,
assessments and homework as the core of their curriculum. But as time goes
by and due to modern industrialization and rapid growth of technology,
availability of job opportunities, talents and deman in manpower are
continuously increasing but with set of standards in one’s educational
background.
Nowadays, the type of school and the courses offered have a direct
correlation with the jobs people can have and how much money they can make.
There are some companies that look onto the applicant’s school background
and grades regardless of his/her skills and trainings attended. These
companies are more concern about the years attended in school and the
learnings they gathered. This gave rise to a more competetive curriculum made
by schools from all over the world. However, the curriculum may only be very
successful depending on how will the school operate and execute the plan.
There are also some schools that focus on academic performance rather than
culture and sports, and vise versa. This result to classify schools according to
the curriculum they offer. For intance, Philippine Normal University is known
for its graduates who are teachers and St. Benilde College for Culinary Arts.
Both school give good opportunities for learners but they differ from the
curriculum that they offer.
Curriculum reflects the diversity of the disciplines that make up
community as a whole and responsible to its society. Curriculum in this
generation is now very dependent on our society’s challenges and needs. Aside
from focusing on teaching-learning process, the curriculum also aims to provide
a long-term solutions to our society’s needs thru service, application and the
use of technology.
