CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Problem

Translation is one of subject that important for English student.

Translation is how to change a text from source language to target language

(Indonesia-English / English-Indeonesia. As a translator should be translate

the meaning be based on the context than the form of the text, because

accuratelly translating source text semantically and grammatically is the first

step of many translation course in Indonesia. Sometimes meaning from a

source text is different with the context, for example; Old Cottage the real

meaning is gubuk tua (form meaning), while, the phrase can’t to change in

target language (Indonesia) is tua gubuk, old as tua and cottage as gubuk. It is

error translation because when changed the meaning from source language to

target languange (Indonesia English or English to Indonesia) sometime should

be inverted.

Translation is not easy to work, because in translating as a translator

should be considered about the grammar equivalence. It is very important to

make the translation look natural and can make the reader understand when

their. Nida state Translation consist of reproducing in the receptor language to

closest natural equivalence of the source language message, first in terms of

meaning and secondly in terms of style. It means in translating must be

equivalence, the reader of translation who knows the target language, only

will be confuse if the target language is influenced by the source language.

In teaching translation lecturer must be known about why and how to

make the students have a good translation. In translating of course some

students still get some promlems, first they don’t understand about grammar,

the second, they have limited vocabulary. In here, the researcher only focus

about grammar equivalence, because grammar equivalence is very important

on translating to make the translation look natural.

Its very difficult for students to translate the text From Indonesia To

English And English To Indonesia. Because when they translate from a source

language to target language (Indonesian-English/English-Indonesian) they

must concern in the grammatical of the sentence. Then the translation must

similar and close to the target language that can make the reader understand of

translator writing.

It is important to make translation as natural as possible between source

language and target language. Brown, (2000), in Cahyani, grammar is the set

of structural rule govering the composition of clauses, phrases, and words and

any given natural language. It means grammar is very important in translating

because if you don’t understand about grammar your translating will be poor.

for example” I love You, saya cinta kamu“ (simple present tense) with I loved

you, saya pernah mencintaimu (simple past tense) if a translator not mastering

grammar they will out of the meaning.

In conclusion, in translating as translator should be changed the text be

based on the context than form of the text. There is some sentence in the text

should be changed be based on the context then form of the taxt. On

translating a translator should be considered about grammar equivalence,

because its very important to make a good translation and make the reader

understand when they read the text. For example, ayam goreng (indonesia as

source language and english as the target language) be based on the context

ayam goreng should be changed to fried chicken not chicken fried, chicken as

ayam and fried as goreng. In translating when translate a text from Indonesia

to English Or English to Indonesia should be inverted.

with slowly, because translation is very difficult to understant. The students

have some problem in translating, but in this paper the researcher only focus

about grammar equivalence, because grmmar is very important to make

translation look natural and understanding by the reader. It is the lecturer work

how to make the students translation will be good and can understand by the

reader.
