HCC’s State of the College Address Embraces the Future of


Education, Employment and the City Itself

HOUSTON (March 26, 2019) – Flanked by other strong local leaders, Houston Community College (HCC)
Chancellor Cesar Maldonado, Ph.D., P.E., will lead the State of the College address, “Powering the
Workforce of Tomorrow,” Wednesday, March 27. The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Hilton
Americas-Houston, 1600 Lamar St.

“Having just last week signed a partnership between the U.S. Dept. of Labor and HCC’s Advance
Manufacturing Center of Excellence, I couldn’t be more proud to discuss the future of our workforce
programs,” says Dr. Maldonado, who will speak on “Embracing Houston’s Future.” “HCC is now the only
community college in the nation with this registered apprenticeship.”

Joining Dr. Maldonado during the breakfast ceremony will be Dr. Stephen Klineberg of the Kinder
Institute at Rice University, presenting “The City of America’s Future,” and Harris County Commissioner
Rodney Ellis, speaking on “The Role of Education in our City’s Future.” HCC Alumna Flor Dimassi will
discuss “HCC’s Impact on Students and Families,” and HCC Faculty Senate President Darin Baskin will
present “21st Century Teaching.”

Others attending the event will be HCC Board of Trustees, led by Chair, Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, and
HCC Foundation Board of Directors
