Topic: Oral Conversation/Listening and Reading/Stem/Grammar –- Sciences Talk “Why
do some animals have shells?” – Animal Map
Class: 1st Grade ELL Class
Population Description: 25 English Language Learner students including two students in
Special Education. These special education students also attend Speech. The language level
of my students ranges from Pre-Emergent to High Intermediate.
Time Frame: Friday, March 1, 2019; 12:50-1:55

Preparation

Life Sciences:
K1.1.U1.7 Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about how organisms use different
body parts for survival.
“All organisms have external parts. Different animals use their body parts in different ways to
see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, move from place to place, and seek, find, and take in
food, water, and air.”
1.1.2U2.7 Develop and use models about how living things use resources to grow and survive;
design and evaluate habitats for organisms using earth materials.
Content Objectives: Students will be able to provide oral representation as to why some animals
have shells.
Language Objectives:
1. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use their prior knowledge to determine
why some animals have shells by providing oral evidence based on the classmate’s
observations.
2. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use their prior knowledge about animals
to provide information regarding the location the animal may live in.
Learning Strategies:

Key Vocabulary: Ocean-animals, shells, observations (As much vocabulary as possible will be
provided by the students)
Cont. Habitat, animals, desert, ocean, rain forest, forest, mountains, observations
Materials: Sea shells, tennis ball, habitat map, animal stick on.

Instruction
Instructional Objective:
The lesson is being taught to help my students utilize their observation skills and prior
knowledge to help determine the reasons why some animals have shells.
The lesson is being taught to help my students with determining the factors that cause certain
animals to live in different places.
Lesson
Introduction of objective:
“Alright, so I have a very fun activity planned for us today. We are going to be doing something
called a science talk. A science talk is where everyone gets to share their ideas about a question.
While we are talking about that question, I want you all to know that there are absolutely no
wrong answers; So, I want everyone to participate and share their ideas because I’m sure that
everyone here has some wonderful ideas about our question. Okay? So, during our science talk, I
want everyone to think about this question; Why do some animals have shells.”
Description of task:
Teacher
1. Teacher will ask the students to come to the floor and create a large circle around the rug.
2. Teacher will introduce the lesson.
3. Teacher will explain to the students what a science talk is.
4. Teacher will explain how students can speak during the lesson and the rules of a science talk.
5. Teacher will demonstrate what passing the ball to each other to determine who’s allowed to
speak.
6. Teacher will tell the students that they are going to receive a sea shell and that they want the
students to quietly look at their sea shell.
7. Teacher will tell the students that if there is talking, or if the student is playing with the sea
shells in a way they shouldn’t, that the teacher will take away the shell.
8. Teacher will ask the students the science talk questions. “Why do some animals have shells?”

9. Teacher will state: “Hands on top.” And get a response from the students: “That means stop.”
10. Teacher will tell the students that they loved hearing what everyone has to say and thought
that everyone shared some great ideas.
11. The teacher will ask the students if they had a good time doing the science talk and if they
would want to do it again.
12. Teacher will then tell the students to listen for their group and go to where they are supposed
to go to grammar stations.
Students:
1. Students will quickly and quietly come to the floor.
2. Students will listen to the teacher introduce their lesson.
3. Students will receive a sea shell and quietly observe it.
3. Students will demonstrate their prior knowledge by sharing with the class their ideas.
4. Students will be quiet and respectful while other students are talking.
9. Students will response to “Hands on top.” By saying “That means stop.”
10. Students will respond to the teacher by raising their hands and telling the teacher if they had
a good time and want to do this kind of activity again.
11. Students will listen to the teacher tell where they will be going for stations.
Assessment/Evaluation:
Assessment will be done during the time of the activity. Teacher will be making sure that
students understand what they are doing by promoting welcoming thoughts to their ideas.
Modifications: (What extensions and modifications will you use to meet the needs of all
students?)
I will prompt students with “What do you think a shell is for?” Or “Is there anything else you can
tell me about shells?” I will monitor students as the ball gets passed around in the class, and
make sure that everyone has time to share their ideas with the class. I will encourage the students
that all their ideas are welcomed and that none are wrong. The purpose of this lesson is to hear
the creativity of their ideas and to promote thoughtful thinking. I will let students work off each
other’s ideas.
Stem Activity:
Introduction of lesson: “So in our group today, we are first going to read a story. If we do a
really good job of going through it, we will play a game afterwards.”

Teacher
1. Teacher will introduce the lesson.
2. Teacher will let the students know that they want to hear all students reading the story
together.
3. Teacher will tell the students to put their names on the book.
4. Teacher will tell the students that they are looking at they are concentrating on words that
have the AR sound in it.
5. Teacher will read the story with the group, watching over everyone to make sure that
everyone is participating.
6. Teacher will have the students fill out the last page of the story.
7. Teacher will tell the students that they get to keep the book and color it at home if they
would like.
8. Teacher will introduce the game.
9. Teacher will hand out materials to the students.
10. Teacher will watch the students play the game, making sure that everyone is participating
and following the rules.
11. Once time is up, teacher will state “hands on top” students will respond “that means
stop.”
12. Teacher will have the students pack up and get ready for library.
Students
1. The students will listen to the teacher introduce the lesson.
2. The students will receive a book.
3. Students will write their names on the book.
4. Students will read the book, concentrating on the words that have the AR sound.
5. Students will fill out back of the book.
6. Students will listen to the teacher introduce the game.
7. Students will play the game.
8. Students will pack up their materials and get ready for library.
Assessment/Evaluation:
Assessment will be done during the time of the activity as the teacher makes sure that everyone
is understanding the game and participating. Teacher will make sure that students are
concentrating on saying their words.

I will monitor students as they are reading the story. I will help the students read words that they
are having difficulty reading. I will monitor students as they are playing the game. I will
encourage students to be actively participating.

Group 2: Will be working on nonsense word practice.
Group 3: Will be working on ‘leveled reader; Fluency; making words.
