Grade(s): 11th grade

School Counseling Program Goal(s) addressed: To increase ACT scores from 16 to 20 or higher.

management, organizational, and study skills

1. SWBAT use test taking strategies to help them perform better on tests

2. Students will learn how to manage their time and build appropriate study habits

Materials:
Power Point

Practice Test of 5-10 Questions (pre and post)

Jeopardy

Procedure:
1. Review the EQ: How can I use test taking strategies to enhance my

classroom test scores?


2. Ask students to share with their shoulder partner: What methods

do you use when taking tests?

3. Share out answers and write them on board. Responses should

vary (read the questions first, writing down information you think

you’ll need before beginning, complete questions you know first,

etc.)

4. Take a pre-test of 5 questions using their own test taking ability

5. Review powerpoint of different test methods and tips, how to

develop study habits, how to become more organized and how to

use the DETER method (Direction, examine, time, easiest, review)

when taking a test.

6. Take a post-test test using the DETER method and other hints

learned; compare the scores from the 2 different tests

7. Test taking skills Jeopardy, short version

Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?

Process Data: Students who attend lesson- counselor will conduct lesson to all 11th grade ELA
classes over 3 days

Perception Data: Pre-test and post tests

Outcome Data: This lesson is designed to help students be better prepared for tests, both in and out of
the classroom, including ACT. Students can tell if they understood the material via a pretest and post
test
Follow Up: Teachers will provide lists of students who did not master the material. They will be
provided one on one tutoring during the first half of lunch until it is deemed that they understand how
to successfully use strategies on future tests. This will be evaluated by reteaching the content and
providing online sample tests using methods taught. Counselors will score the tests and mediate until
student meets goals.
