EPT312 VIBRATION AND MECHANICS OF MACHINES

SEM 2 2017/2018

Mid-Term Exam

Duration: 2 hours.

This question paper has TWO (2) questions, the total mark is 50. Answer all questions.

Question 1

(i) Describe briefly, with examples, two (2) criteria to be considered in selection
of a mechanical power transmission mechanism.
(4 Marks)

(ii) A belt having a cross section of 120 mm x 11 mm transmits maximum power

with a contact angle of 165˚ on the smaller pulley. The density of the belt
material is 750 kg/m3 and the coefficient of friction is 0.25. The permissible
tension in the belt is 2.0 N/mm2. Determine the power that can be transmitted
at 20 m/s.

Question 2

(i) An open rope drive uses 3 improved plow steel (IPS) wire ropes to transmit
mechanical power between its shafts located 8 m on a loading machine. The
driving pulley, with diameter of 500 mm is rotating at 1400 rpm while the
diameter of the driven pulley is 1 m. The ropes are used with pulleys having
groove angle of 40°, with diameter of each rope being 22 mm. It can be
assumed that the rope diameter has negligible effect on the velocity. The rope
is made of material with density of 5051 kg/m3 and the coefficient of friction
is 0.13. The rope safe stress is 120 N/mm2. Given that the slip between the
rope and both pulleys is 6%, determine:

1
(a) The efficiency of the drive
(b) The speed of the driven shaft
(c) The total power available for material loading and unloading, taking
consideration of the centrifugal effect.
(26 Marks)

(ii) In order to reduce the cost, it is suggested that the ropes are to be replaced
with V-belts. Decide whether the replacement is justifiable and explain your
reason.
