School History and Community
Colegio Boston was founded in 1984 in La Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez. It was
conceived as an educational institution which would offer High School education of the
highest quality to young women in the area who aspired to be qualified bilingual
secretaries. Although the school opened with an enrollment of only 13 students, it soon
became a leader within its field in Sacatepéquez.

In 1990, Colegio Boston expanded its operations to include Middle School students. Nine
years later, the cycle was completed when the school opened Kindergarten, Elementary,
and High School for both boys and girls, thus becoming a coeducational bilingual school. A
high school program which included orientation in Computer Technology was offered
initially; it was later expanded to offer orientation in Sciences and Letters as another
option.

The decision to expand the school’s services arose in answer to a need for private
education of the highest standard, one which would permit graduates to matriculate in
the best national and international universities and colleges. Such was the response of
local parents that Colegio Boston’s student and teacher population quadrupled in five
years, necessitating that the school be transferred to its present location in San Lorenzo el
Cubo, Ciudad Vieja, Sacatepéquez. Nestled among imposing volcanoes and abundant
foliage, the school is currently comprised of five modules, a large cafeteria, and a recently-
built gymnasium.

Today, Colegio Boston is a leading force in the educational community of Sacatepéquez,


its qualified human resources, infrastructure, and programs satisfying the requirements of
the community it serves. A Department of Student Orientation also contributes to the
professional development and growth of the entire student body, as does the program of
values formation.

The sense of social responsibility which also characterizes Colegio Boston manifests itself
in diverse ways: a student scholarship program, social visits regularly carried out by
students, as well as Dual Language programs offered to public school teachers and other
organizations in the locality. Branches of Universidad Galileo and Universidad Rafael
Landivar presently operate in the school´s installations.

Student Enrollment and Demographics


To date, 1,086 students have graduated from Colegio Boston, including the 43 seniors who
graduated in 2018. Of the 466 students currently enrolled, 100% express an interest in matriculating
in either national or international universities after graduation.

School Calendar
Colegio Boston’s academic year begins in January and ends in mid-October. The school year consists
of 180 school days which are organized into quarters, each school day being divided into seven 45-
minute periods. Local Guatemalan holidays are observed and recesses scheduled at Easter, mid-
year, and year’s end.

Students follow a common core, bilingual curriculum mandated by Guatemala’s Ministry
of Education (Mineduc). Students take the following classes:

9th Grade: Spanish Language, Mayan Language, English Language, Information and
Communication Technology, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Music, Art,
Dance, Theater, Home Economics and Workshop, Accounting, Physical Education, and
Education in Values.

10th Grade: Spanish Language, Mayan Language, English Language, Information and
Communication Technology, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Music, Art,
Dance, Theater, Home Economics and Workshop, Accounting, Physical Education, and
Education in Values.

11th. Grade: Hispanic Literature, Information and Communication Technology,

Values.

11th Grade (with orientation in Computer Science): Hispanic Literature, Mathematics,

Grading
Colegio Boston’s students receive numeric grades on a 100-point scale; the passing grade
is 60. Sixty percent of the final grade is derived from classwork, while the remaining forty
percent is derived from quarterly exams.

100% scale: Excellent/High Honors: 91-100

Above Average/Honors: 81-90

Average/Good: 71-80

Below Average/Satisfactory: 60-70

Failure: 59 or below
