Pastor’s Corner
What a fun afternoon it was for our church last Sunday being a part of the St. Patrick’s Day
parade through Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg! I was amazed to find out that our parade
through the Stroudsburgs was the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the state of Pennsylvania,
with seventy-five floats including our own. There are so many people to thank for their work on
our part of the parade, including Bethany Mills and Sarah Kuhnle who did much of the
organizing, to Liz Green, Bruce Johnson, and Ray Moeller for designing and assembling the float
to the many who made financial and candy donations. Comments were heard along the parade route, along the lines
of “That’s the church which has the community meals every week!” to “Hey, that’s the church which does so much for
the community!” These are comments to make a pastor’s heart proud, not because of anything I’ve done but
because all that each of YOU have done!
I especially want to thank the 30+ people who walked the several miles of the parade. Part of the parade contingent
were our youth who walked in front introducing our part of the parade. Many of those same youth, at the conclusion
of the parade, jumped in one of our church vans to travel the four-and-a-half hours to Washington, DC. Through
Robin Braun’s connection with Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, ten youth and four adults were privileged to
enjoy not only a great tour of the Supreme Court building on Capitol Hill on Monday, but a time alone with Justice
Alito to hear his answers to questions posed by our youth. I was delighted to be able to attend with the youth and to
drive our church van through DC last Monday. DC is my old “stomping grounds,” having been raised only 4 miles
outside the city in the VA suburbs. Thanks to Robin and Pat for setting up the overnight and for accompanying the
youth on this special, informative trip.
I am looking forward to our one-day retreat this Saturday at Pocono Plateau, and look forward to seeing many of you
there. If not there, I will certainly see you on Sunday as we continue with Not a Fan and the message Scott Kuhnle
will bring to the congregation.

Spring Cantata: Help still needed!

ESUMC’s Music Ministry is in need of a wide variety of


skills and invites anyone who can sing, read, write or
help with costume design to participate! If you possess

Our Cantata, Prayer: Lord, I’m Listening, is scheduled


for Sunday, May 5th, at Traditional & Contemporary
Worship Services. Rehearsal information is as follows:
Thursday, April 4th and 11th, from 7-8pm. Rehearsal will
not be held on Thursday, April 18th, due to our Maundy
Thursday service. Rehearsals resume Monday, April
29th, at 6:30pm, and continue Monday-Thursday
evenings, from 6:30-8:00pm, until May 2nd.

Please note: Participants are required to attend the final


dress rehearsal on Saturday, May 4th, from 10am-12pm.

NOTES FROM THE NURSERY:
The preschool children learned the story of Jesus healing
a blind man, and, in continuing with our Community
Helper lessons, the class was visited by ESUMC’s own
Dr. Kristin Marek. She talked about how doctor’s help to
take care of people and showed the children different
tools that doctor’s use. The children got to try out
equipment as well as make a doctor kit of their
own. They presented her with a certificate of
appreciation and enjoyed her visit to the
preschool nursery. Thanks Dr. Marek!

immediately following Contemporary Worship, we’re
inviting you to stay in your pew for a few minutes longer
than normal. Rich Strack & a few individuals from our
Worship Planning Team will briefly share important
sound equipment upgrades and anticipated changes you’ll see happening in the near future. So hang tight for about
20 minutes after service and get “in the know” about these exciting changes at ESUMC. Hope to see you there!

Audio Video System Update Synopsis for ESUMC


The Trustees have approved a plan to update and improve our current audio and video capabilities at this time for
multiple reasons.
Much equipment in our setup is beyond it’s usual useful lifespan and needs to be replaced in order to re-establish
reliability. A number of items are also suboptimal and/or aging. In addition, the worship planning team and steering
team have agreed to go ahead with video streaming of our services for access remotely, at home, by shut-ins, in
other rooms in our church, and while on vacation. This is the current model for progressive churches, and is kind of
expected by many people seeking a new church. All of the churches I have visited on vacation recently have
provided this service.
So, the updates include some new electronics, cables, microphones, computers, new larger, but less visible video
monitors in the front of the sanctuary, and wiring infrastructure. In addition, we will be remodeling the right side of the
balcony somewhat in order to improve and expand the audio and video booths.
These additions and changes will greatly improve reliability and expand function and should have no adverse effects
on our church visually or aesthetically.
I will be answering questions and providing more details at the brief April 7th after 10:45 service meeting. I will also
have diagrams of the balcony changes for all to review at that time. In the meantime, feel free to ask myself or one of
the Trustees any questions. For more information about the these changes, please read the next page of the TC.

ESUMC’s Audio Visual Project Update

Mike Carlson, our Steering Team Leader, has asked me to provide an updated review of our
AV project. I have broken this down into 4 areas.

#1 Items that are failing


* Mixing board - less than half of inputs work
* Multiple bad connections in the system
* Multiple microphones are not functioning up to par
* Issues with the AC power causes multiple reboots of the system that can trip
breakers if a proper sequence isn’t followed
* Computer - similar issues, with multiple reboots required. Also, it does not ac-
cept the newer programs we wish to use, thus, we are forced to use outdated
software
* WIFI connection currently being used is unreliable
To have the system function as it should, we need to replace these pieces of equipment. We
put our proposed system out for bid. We chose the company “Adlib” as they presented the
lowest price as well as desirable service features. As an added plus, todays equipment offers
enhanced functions and flexibility. The trustees have approved the purchase of the first piece
of equipment, a new mixing board.

The mixing board is the nerve center of the audio system. It has more impact on control than
any other piece of equipment. The one Charlie has chosen (and I approve) will handle analog
and digital inputs and is extremely flexible. It features some adjustments that can be controlled
remotely with a tablet thru WIFI. It has an expected lifespan of about 10 years. It cannot be re-
placed by a tablet, but some functions can be enhanced with a tablet.

#2 Items that are not at an optimal level


* Microphones – replacing these would greatly enhance vocals and reliability,
particularly for the pastor
* Monitor Setup – replacing these would make the musicians job much easier,
and reduce feedback (a monitor is a speaker near the musician he required to
hear the sound properly)
* Drum mics – these are not essential, but they will enhance overall sound mix
and provide control. They are required if we wish to record our music and/or
services.
* Replace video monitors – also, not essential, but these are beginning to show
their age with reduced performance. New monitors would produce an image
that is 10” larger.

#3 AV Equipment Location
Our AV technicians have difficulty with the current location of the sound booth
(equipment area) as it is to the right side of the balcony (as one looks toward the pulpit) thus
reflecting sound off of the wall and away from them. We are contemplating a few arrange-
ments, but the most likely is Plan C.
Plan A: Adlib strongly recommends moving the sound booth to the center front of
the balcony. This is an ideal location acoustically, but not visually.
Plan B: The sound booth is located in the center middle of the balcony. This
leaves the entire front of the balcony open. The sound and vision will not be
ideal, but doable. The front pews will remain intact, but it will requires remov-
ing the back two rows of pews.
Plan C: To move the audio board away from the side wall, and additional 10-12
feet from where it stands now. The computer would be to the right and the vid-
eo and lighting desks behind. This would take up the right side of the balcony
to the back wall, but leave a walkway in back, as it is now. The sound quality
here is close to that of center front.

#4 Equipment necessary for recording and streaming church services


* Running CAT6 cable
* WiFi equipment
* Setting up appropriate WiFi service
* Lighting necessary for quality videos
* Second computer

Summary
In my opinion #1 needs to be done to maintain function. #2 and #3 should be done at the same time if
we want to get ahead of the replacement curve and save time and effort and well as noticeably improve
function.

For #3 we are leaning towards plan C. We will be making a final decision shortly. We will soon be
getting an architectural millwright plan. Everyone is in agreement that we need to fit with the existing
architecture, and it needs to be of high quality.

#4 Is a recommended plan of the worship team. They feel it is important we enable ESUMC to be in line
with other churches with regards to convenience and providing streaming and multiple viewing area
access. It is certainly something that most new churches are doing and something that tech savvy
Christians consider when they are looking for a new church.
