Introduction to the Study

This chapter is divided into five parts: (1) Background of the Study, (2) Epistemological

and Theoretical Framework, (3) Statement of the Problem, (4) Significance of the Study, (5)

Definition of Terms, and (6) Delimitation of the Study.

Part One, Background of the Study, presents the introduction to the study and discusses

the rationale for choosing the study.

Part Two, Epistemological and Theoretical Framework,

Part Three, Statement of the Problem, describes the issues that need to be addressed

by the researcher.

Part Four, Significance of the Study, states the beneficiaries and the benefits that could

be derived from the results of the study.

Part Five, Definition of Terms, alphabetically cites and defines conceptually and

operationally essential words or terms used in the study.

Part Six, Delimitation of the Study, identifies the coverage of the study.

Background of the Study

Biographical research in education may be conceived in many different ways; however,

typically the topic con-stitutes the study of a single life, focusing primarily upon an individual

who in some way is affiliated with the professional field of education, broadly conceived

(Garraty, 1957; Oates, 1986). Other research methodologies are often bundled within the

descriptor of biography and include life history writing, oral history, memoir, autobiography, and

life narrative (Roberts, 2002; Josselson & Lieblich, 1993).

This study is a biographical research about the life and works of Arne Sunico

Lubasan – the pioneer music educator in western visayas. It will elicit the following: (1) his

accomplishments, (2) advocacies and contributions to musical arts and finally, (3) his social

relationships to his coleagues, students and close friends. The result of this study will further

document his works and compositions.

This study is motivated by the drive to introduce our local artist in the region. He is one

of the most celebrated and sought-after vocal coaches and accompanists in Western Visayas

Region. After all, several of his students won in major singing competitions both in regional and

national levels (News Today, 2007). Thus, he is considered as one of the contemporary artist of

the era. According to Reyes (2012), the work of contemporary asrtist is a combination of

materials, methods, concepts and subjects that challenge traditional boundaries and defy easy

definition. Hence, the life and works of local contemporary artist has been included in the K to

12 curriculum (DepEd, 2016).

Walker (2001) claims that local artist play a big role in helping teachers and students

learn about one another across the socially defined differences of race and ethnicity. The

insights gaines from these artist indicate that art is considered a means of preserving the

history and culture.

(Summary)

Epistemological and Theoretical Perspective

Great man theories assume that the capacity for leadership is inherent – that great

leaders are born, not made. These theories often portray great leaders as heroic, mythic and

destined to rise to leadership when needed. The term "Great Man" was used because, at the

time, leadership was thought of primarily as a male quality, especially in terms of military

leadership. Such theories suggest that people cannot really learn how to become strong

leaders. It's either something you are born with or born without. It is very much a nature (as

opposed to nurture) approach to explaining leadership (Cherry, 2019).

Social Learning Theory is a theory of learning and social behavior which proposes that

new behaviors can be acquired by observing and imitating others (Bandura, 1971). It states

that learning is a cognitive process that takes place in a social context and can occur purely

through observation or direct instruction, even in the absence of motor reproduction or direct

reinforcement (Holt, et. al, 1963). In addition to the observation of behavior, learning also

occurs through the observation of rewards and punishments, a process known as vicarious

reinforcement. When a particular behavior is rewarded regularly, it will most likely persist;

conversely, if a particular behavior is constantly punished, it will most likely desist (Renzetti, et.

al, 2012) The theory expands on traditional behavioral theories, in which behavior is governed

solely by reinforcements, by placing emphasis on the important roles of various internal

processes in the learning individual.

Interpretive theory is a general category of theory including symbolic interactionism,

labeling, ethnomethodology, phenomenological sociology and social construction of reality.

Interpretive theory is typically contrasted with structural theories which claim to remove the

subjectivity of the actor and the researcher and assume that human behavior can best be

understood as determined by the pushes and pulls of structural forces. Interpretive theory is

more accepting of free will and sees human behavior as the outcome of the subjective

interpretation of the environment. Structural theory focuses on the situation in which people act

while interpretive theory focuses on the actor's definition of the situation in which they act

(Weber, 1920). Hence, the researcher formulated a symbolic interactionism as seen in figure 1

as the backbone of this study.

The above mentioned theories served as the guiding principles of this study.
