Title: “Google, Democracy, and the Truth about Internet Search” by Carole Cadwalladr
After Reading
The authors purpose was to describe social network usage in todays American society. The authors
claim was that the social networks are controlling of the search engine, and that this creates
unwanted bias. The author implements that bias does not give the information the researcher is
looking for. The authors concern is that people will start to allow search bars to take the control of
their thought process. The author agrees that this is damaging to the American society because it
will cause a problem in the future which is the research bias. The purpose to this excerpt is to
inform the society about the problem bias is causing in which it controls peoples thought process,
and messes with the observation. It also motivates readers the power to create a change by not
letting these networks mess with their system. By allowing the controlling of the networks will
argument?
The rhetorical devices used were diction, audience, and logic. The author used diction in the
excerpt by how simplistic is was to read the authors claim. For instance, when Cadwalladr uses
other authors she uses diction as presented, “What Epstein’s work has shown is that the contents
of a page of search results can influence people’s views and opinions” (493). This is a perfect
example because of how the sentence is formal, it gave credit to the source, and was legible for
her argument. Audience was used in this excerpt and the author made it directly to the American
Society. Audience helped identify the group and allowed the readers to make a change if it
impacted their own society. The author lastly used logic in which she cited a lot of evidence. In
one part this is excellent because her argument grew stronger as she gathered why the search bias
Internet search engines that provide bias gives the researches a base to establish its research with
questions one never thought of. One of the benefits of having bias is that it allows one with a start
of questions. It provides one a way to cut down the research and go straight to the point. Most
importantly it allows individuals to see what other people in their society are interested in. By
having these aspects if one were to eliminate the bias it will increase search time. In which will be
frustrating for the society because the internet network was made to help not implement struggles.
By removing bias, it will remove the major conversation of the topic that was researched. This is
impactful because it will not communicate the society’s need and desired research that they are all
interested in.
