Biography Rudy Hartono

Rudy Hartono's Badminton Career Trip

Rudy Hartono Kurniawan, who was born with the name Nio Hap Liang on August 18,
1949, was the third child of Semblan brothers, his father, Zulkarnaen Kurniawan. Rudy's two
brothers, Freddy Harsono and Diana Veronica are also badminton players even though they
are new at the regional level.

His younger siblings were Jeanne Utami, Eliza Laksmi Dewi, Ferry Harianto, Tjosi
Hartanto, and Hauwtje Hariadi. Some of his younger siblings also became players at the
regional level. This large family lives on Jalan Kaliasin 49, now Jalan Basuki Rachmat, a
business district in Surabaya. This residence is also a place for sewing business. Their other
businesses include milk processing near Wanokromo.

The father, first joined the Badminton Association of Okay which he founded in 1951.
In 1964 the organization was dissolved and he moved to Surya Naga Group. Here, the father
was asked to train young players. In training, Zulkarnaen applies four standards: speed,
breathing, consistency, and aggressiveness. Because of that standard, he often trains players
to be proficient in the field of athletic sports in particular short and long distance runs, jumps,
and so on.

Childhood

Like other children, little Rudy is also interested in participating in various types of
sports in schools, especially athletics. When he was in elementary school, he liked to swim.
Middle school, he likes to play volleyball and high school, he became a good soccer player.
Even so, badminton is the biggest interest.

When he was 9 years old, Rudy had shown his talent in this sport. But his father,
Zulkarnaen Kurniawan, only realized this talent when Rudy was 11 years old. His father was
a badminton player who participated in his youth.
Before that Rudy only practiced on the asphalt highway in front of the PLN office in
Surabaya, previously known as Jalan Gemblongan - written by Rudy Hartono in his book
Rajawali with Jurus Padi (1986). Rudy trains only on Sundays, from morning until 10 at
night. After feeling enough, Rudy decided to take part in small competitions around Surabaya
which at that time were usually only lit by petromax lights.

After his father became aware of his son's talent, little Rudy began to be trained
systematically at the Okay Badminton Association with a pattern of training determined by
his father. As information, Rudy's father was also a badminton player in his youth.
Zulkarnain once played in the main class competition in Surabaya. Zulkarnain first played for
the Okay Badminton Association which he founded himself in 1951. In this association
Rudy's father also trained young players. The coaching program emphasizes four main
things: speed, good breathing, consistency of the game and aggressiveness in picking up the
target. Not surprisingly, many coaching programs emphasize the athletic side, such as long
and short distance running and also high jump training.

When Rudy started practicing at the Association that he had at that time Rudy felt the
real professional training. At that time the association where Rudy's father trained only had a
training room in the train carriage warehouse at Karangmenjangan PJKA. With such
conditions Rudy continued to practice with enthusiasm and he even felt that his father's
training ground was far better than the previous practice site because the building room had
used electric lights so that he could keep practicing to the full evenings. In addition, the field
provided was also better than before and there was also a canteen next to the training
building.

Early career

After a long time joining his father's group, Rudy finally decided to move to a bigger
badminton group, the Rajawali Group, a group that has produced many badminton players in
the world. At the beginning he joined this group, Rudy felt he had found the best group to
develop his badminton talent. But after discussing with his father, Rudy admitted that if he
wanted his badminton career to increase, he would have to move to a better training place, so
Rudy decided to move to the Thomas Cup Training Center in late 1965. Shortly after that ,
Rudy's appearance improved. In fact, he took part in winning the Thomas Cup for Indonesia
in 1967. At the age of 18, Rudy won the All England Champion title for the first time by
defeating Tan Aik Huang of Malaysia with final results 15-12 and 15-9. After that he
continued to win this title until 1974.
