4 Days of Discovering Who God Made You to Be

We have a rule in my house about eating in the kitchen.

All of the food stays in the kitchen because I don’t want to go all over the house cleaning up after people. I try really
hard not to clean up after people. I call my kids out of their rooms — or out of their beds at night, if necessary — to
clean up what they messed up.

Call me a mean mom.

It’s okay. I’m used to it.

But on that rare occasion when one of my kiddos gets bold enough to sneak something out of the kitchen and into the
living area, it doesn’t remain a secret for long.

Why?

Because they leave a trail, like an empty wrapper, a sticky spot on the floor or crumbs.

When my kids were smaller, they were infamous for leaving a trail of crumbs. They didn’t mean to; it was just in their
nature to do so. Those crumbs were inevitable, especially when they would get hold of some of those dadgum Cheez-Its.

If the little cracker criminal was bold enough to walk freely around my house, I’d always know exactly where to find him
by following his trail.

I just had to pay attention to the crumbs.

Did you know that God has been gracious enough to leave us crumbs? It’s true, and it’s a good thing. These crumbs are
signs of His guidance that He places before us to take notice of.

It’s in His nature to do so. Psalm 37:23 says, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their
lives.”

God enjoys seeing us live out the details of our lives, and He helps us on the way by leaving us a trail of crumbs right in
plain sight to follow.

Even when we feel lost in life, there’s always a way out! The first and most obvious of those crumbs are the words that
He has taken care, over thousands of years, to make available for our instruction. Psalm 119:133 says, “Direct my
footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.”

We can’t see our path, my friend, if we don’t look in two places — what God has said in His Word for revelation to all
and also what He has placed in us individually that directs our lives according to our gifts, abilities, interests and natures.

There have been many seasons of my life when I wish I’d been more spiritually minded and more consistent in acting on
the principles I’m sharing with you here. But that’s what I love about God. He has kept on loving and leading me even
when I haven’t always been as faithful as I could have been.

And He is always loving and leading you too.

Just follow the crumbs.

I’m going to lead you through an exercise that will force you to think about the small things. The crumbs of your life so
far. But here’s the thing … It’s never just about the crumbs; it’s about following a trail that leads somewhere.

You never know how God can use where you are right now to lead you to where He wants you to be. You serve a God
who knows you better than you know yourself. He wants you to follow the breadcrumbs so He can surprise you with
who He knows you can be!

Over the next four days, you’re going to spend time reflecting on your life at different ages and stages. As you look
back on the crumbs God has left you, prayerfully consider what your crumbs say about who He’s created you to be.

Take time to look at your life to see what’s inside of you and who you already know yourself to be. Be willing to make
connections in unexpected places or to walk through unexpected doors as God opens them on your behalf.

DAY 1: The Younger Years
In the second grade, I found myself in the middle of an effort to break up a catfight between two girls from my class.
Nobody asked for my help, but there’s something in my DNA that doesn’t like to see unnecessary anguish, anger or
heartache. I recall feeling as if it were my duty to help them make peace; because if they had peace, then our class
would have peace, and we’d have a better classroom if we could all be on the same page. In my second-grade brain, it
totally made sense that I would spend part of recess with one girl on one end of the playground hearing her side of the
story, then walk to the other end to do the same with the other girl.

STEP 1: Describe a distinct memory you have as a child that is telling of your personality, gifts, interests or nature.

STEP 2: Write out any questions or revelations that came out of today’s reflection. Is there anything you want to take
to God in prayer?

STEP 3: Think and pray about this memory throughout the day. Ask God to reveal what it says about how He created
you.

DAY 2: The Teenage Years
In the church youth group I always seemed to have ideas for how we could make things better and experience more
community. I felt like it was my duty to meet with the leaders of the youth group, present my thoughts and then help
implement everything I’d presented. My goal was to create a collective experience that would benefit everybody.

STEP 1: Describe a distinct memory you have as a teenager that is telling of your personality, gifts, interests or nature.
Do you see any patterns?

STEP 2: Write out any questions or revelations that came out of today’s reflection. Is there anything you want to take
to God in prayer?

STEP 3: Think and pray about this memory throughout the day. Ask God to reveal how your memory today is
connected to the one from yesterday.

DAY 3: The Adult Years
As a mom at home with young children, I lamented the fact that none of my friends lived on my street. Every house
nearby was empty because the other moms were at work, and I felt very alone. So I jumped online and invited a bunch
of my other stay-at-home-mommy friends to join me in an email group so we could chat throughout the day like
neighbors would. I figured out the technology behind the idea, gave everyone instructions on how to use it and served
as the moderator for years.

STEP 1: Describe a distinct memory you have as an adult (or young adult) that is telling of your personality, gifts,
interests or nature. Do you see any patterns?

STEP 2: Write out any questions or revelations that came out of today’s reflection. Is there anything you want to take
to God in prayer?

STEP 3: Think and pray about this memory throughout the day. How has God used your past to bring you to where you
are today?

DAY 4: Following the Crumbs
What I learned from looking back is that I love bringing people together … but not just in any way. I love seeing where
people are not together and then creating an environment, a structure, or a program to bring them together. Not only
is it a natural gifting for me; being a gatherer of people is an ability I’ve cultivated over time, even without being aware
of it.

STEP 1: Look back on your trail. Is it clear? How has God used who you are and what you know so far? How has it
affected your career choices? Relationships? Do you need to make any changes?

STEP 2: Write out any questions or revelations that came out of today’s reflection. Is there anything you want to take
to God in prayer?

STEP 3: Based on what you’ve heard God say to you over the last few days, write a short statement declaring who God
made you to be and post it in a place that will help you remember “she’s still there.”
