Assignment title Assignment 1: Global Conflicts and International Organisations

The purpose of this assignment is to:

Explore current conflicts from around the globe, you will investigating the causes, impact and involvement of
both national and international organisations. Learners will examine key international organisations and how
they work with differing political systems. This will develop learners’ understanding of how regime change
can occur.

Scenario:
As a young police officer you have decided to apply for a promotion. To get this promotion you have to
show knowledge of global conflicts. To do this you must complete the tasks for your Superintendent.

Task 1

You are to produce an A4 magazine / journal in which you:

1. Explain how conflicts can be caused by differing ideologies. 2.1 and give examples.

2. Evaluate links between conflicts and terrorism. 2.2 (consider the formation and acts of such groups as Al
Qaeda and IS)

3. Examine recent examples of political change internationally 3.1 (the Arab Spring would be a good example)

4. Evaluate the impact of conflict on UK and international public service organisations, considering:
peacekeeping including ensuring the safety of the local population and fair elections, training and evacuation of
UK nationals. 2.3

Your magazine / journal may have visual content and contain colour maps, images, graphs etc. No more than 15 pages
in total

Professional presentation is required and all research materials must be submitted

As this is a magazine / journal, you can give full references at the end of each section, reference in text not
required

Task 2

In pairs you are to produce a presentation in which you:

1. Analyse the roles of national and international organisations in recent conflicts 2.4. To do this you must
outline the roles of key organisations and analyse in more detail the roles of two of them.

2. Evaluate the effectiveness of these international organisations’ management of recent political change
situations 3.2

Should you prefer working alone for task two you must submit a 1500 word essay. For the essay you will be required to
reference to Harvard Standard.

Unit Content – to gain a PASS grade in this task the following content must be considered, researched and
if relevant included:

Different ideologies: political; religious; nationalism; fundamentalism; links to conflicts eg Iraq,


Afghanistan, Rwanda, Balkan States, Syria

Causes of conflict: including politics, nationalism, religion, ideology, land and resources,
historical rivalry, ethnic conflict

Links to terrorism: eg Northern Ireland, Iraq, Afghanistan, IRA, PIRA, al-Qaeda; terrorist
atrocities, Omagh, 9/11, London Bombings, Chechnya, changes in terrorism

Impact of conflict on UK public services: peacekeeping including ensuring the safety of the local
population and fair elections eg in Iraq, Bosnia, Sierra Leone; training eg Iraq; security and evacuation of UK
nationals

Role of UK and international organisations: UK public services including military, policing, border
agencies; UK government; EU and joint EU public services including military, policing, border agencies;
armed forces under auspices of NATO, UN; role of NATO, UN, UNICEF, WHO; rules of engagement,
peacekeeping mandates
