DESIGN OVERVIEW INTRODUCTION

The planning process of most projects can be iterative and thereby

validated, proven, and documented data center physical infrastructure plans.
Target Availability
The use of these designs has a positive impact on not just the project itself,
Tier 1 but also on the performance, reliability, and efficiency of the data center over
its lifetime.

Facility Power
The facility power system provides power to all of the critical and non-critical
components within the datacenter. It consists of a single power path with N UPS
to achieve a Tier 1 redundant architecture. An optional generator has been
added to provide additional availability in the event of an extended power
outage.
The facility power system has a QED-2 switchboard with an 800 amp main bus
that feeds both the IT space and facility cooling UPSs. A 225 kVA Galaxy VM
UPS serves as the IT space UPS, and provides highly-efficient critical power in
TM
double conversion, ECO, or ECOnversion modes with a small footprint. A 40

Facility Cooling
The facility cooling design is comprised of a chilled water cooling system in the
IT space, integrated with a single chilled water loop with N+1 pumps in the
mechanical space and a single packaged chiller outdoors. Altogether, they form
a Tier 1 architecture.
The facility cooling contains a 232 kW air-cooled water chiller with a free-cooling
system. Economization is achieved with dry coolers integrated within the chiller
to save energy during favorable outdoor conditions.
The piping architecture feeds room-based Uniflair chilled water CRAHs in the IT
space. It also feeds a room-based Uniflair CRAH in the electrical space. More
information on the cooling configuration is provided in the IT space section of

IT Space
A single power distribution path from the electrical space powers the Tier 1 IT
space, consisting of 25 kW of critical cooling load and 170 kW of critical IT load,
fed by PDUs in an N configuration.
61 NetShelter racks of an average 2.8 kW per rack density are arranged in a
highly scalable and adaptable “pod” fashion. Smaller starting loads can be
supported by making adjustments such as reducing the number of IT pods or
decreasing the capacity of the UPS. Likewise, larger loads can be reached by
using a “step and repeat” approach with this design as the baseline. This
flexibility drives efficiency and defers capital expenditure until needed.
Each pod is powered by floor-mount modular PDUs. Each rack is configured

Data Center Infrastructure

Management (DCIM) System
Good design and quality construction alone do not ensure a highly available &
efficient data center. DCIM provides on-going monitoring and control to ensure the
facility lives up to its design intent. StruxureWare for Data Centers is a software
management suite designed to collect and manage data about a data center’s
assets, resource use, and operational status throughout the life cycle of the facility.
This information is then distributed, integrated, and applied in ways that help
managers optimize the data center’s performance and meet IT, business, and
service-oriented goals. From IT assets to racks, rows, rooms and buildings,
StruxureWare for Data Centers delivers the right information to the right users at the
right time.

Control level: Experts, on site or remotely, can control process performance and
ensure business continuity in real time, while tracking energy consumption in a highly
critical and secure environment.

Operations level: Functional managers can optimize operations, energy, and assets
through smart analytical tools, often spanning multiple sites.

Enterprise level: C-level executives can drive their sustainability strategy efficiently,
choosing the best scenario that meets their business objective to conserve
enterprise-wide resources.

StruxureWare for Data Centers allows for flexibility when requirements and
implementation strategies change over time. StruxureWare software applications
and suites simplify integration time, improve reliability, enhance visibility to energy
information, and streamline operational efficiency.
