1.0 INTRODUCTION

Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer based information system used

to digitally represent and analyse the geographic features present on the earth’s surface and the
events (non-spatial attributes linked to the geography under study) that taking place on it. The
meaning to represent digitally is to convert analogue (smooth line) into a digital form.

GIS technology integrates common database operation such as query and statistical
analysis with the unique visualization and geographic analysis benefits make it valuable to a
wide range to public and private enterprises for explaining events, predicting outcomes, and
planning.

GIS is widely accepted as a tool for the establishment of integrating spatial and
attribute data. In recent years the development of Geographical Information System (GIS)
makes timely accessible of spatial and temporal data. Moreover, its capability of spatial
analysis and presentation makes it useful tool for this kind of applications.

Data collection for this project is the location of various types of retaining wall in
UKM that will lead to effective and efficient planning for better management. There are various
types of retaining wall which are:

 Concrete block
 Stone Veneer
 Poured Concrete
 Brick
 Wood
 Boulders
 Gabion
 Timber
 Natural Stone
 Limestone
2.0 OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of this project are:

• Loading the complete image of location of retaining wall in UKM

• Segmenting that image of the each retaining wall into the corresponding sections.
• Create the database related to the retaining wall and each section.
• Insert, Delete, and Update data of the database at ArcGIS Online.
• Retrieve data from the database according to the queries and show the results to the
users.

3.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT

• To locate and determine the location of retaining wall inside UKM region along the

main route.

• To identify the features or attributes of retaining walls such as lengths, widths,

locations, coordination and type of materials.

• To apply the knowledge on using the ArcGIS application by inserting all the

obtained data of retaining walls in UKM.

4.0 METHODOLOGY

1. Each group is given a location as in the attachment.

2. Gathered the data from the field based on each group.
3. Processed the data into spatial data.
4. Entered the attributes of the collected data.
5. Uploaded the data using an online ArcGIS application based on username of each
group (https://www.arcgis.com/home/index.html).
5.0 RESULTS

6.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, there are 19 retaining walls built in UKM. The longest retaining wall

lies in Faculty of Science & Technology (FST) new building area (near the hilly road to

Pendeta Za’ba College) which is 98 meters long while the shortest retaining wall is located

at the edge of the UKM field (near Danau UKM) which is 16 meters long.

Furthermore, the highest retaining wall is located in Faculty of Science & Technology

(FST) new building area which is 5.95 meters height while the lowest retaining wall is

located at the front of the UKM Mosque which is as high as 0.83 meters only.
Besides that, stone veneer and concrete block are the most common materials to create

a retaining wall, respectively, in six different locations. While only 2 locations are using

brick as a material making the retaining wall, both are located in Faculty of Law (FUU)

area.

The geographical features of the hilly terrain in UKM cause the retaining wall to be

constructed because the retaining walls able to reduce the amount of cut and fill processes.

So, by building a retaining wall, we can reduce the cost of a project in addition to

maintaining the structure of the land and ecosystems in the project area.
