Abstract and Executive Summary

College students need to balance work, friends, family, and assignments. It can

be easy to overlook the critical importance of getting great internship experience.

However, in today’s competitive economy, it is crucial that students make an

internship a top priority.

If you have a relevant internship displayed on your resume, it will give you a

competitive advantage over all the candidates applying for the same position.

Employers understand that graduates that do not have any practical experience

may lack the skills required to excel on the first day of their employment.

Employers value internship experience because they provide students with the

skills and experience that they cannot acquire in a school setting.

In my internship for more than 2 months in a law firm that deals primarily with

Labor and Business law, I came to know the intricacies of my course in relation to

the relevant labor laws, rules and regulations. Being an HR student, I saw the

importance of my course in the field of employment. HRs are everywhere, they

can be on the IT industry, manufacturing, call centers, accounting, law firms,

hospitals and many more. This is a realization that Human Resources is a

valuable resource in the world of work thus, I my experience in my internship

showed me the future of my career.

In this report, you will see my various experiences in relation to my course at our

beloved school.

Part I – Introduction

Importance of Internship based from students’ actual experience. This

explains specific benefits and importance of Internship based from your own

experiences.

The importance of on the job training based on our actual experiences is to

enhance our knowledge, talents, and treasure’s what we learned in school,

my experiences as a student of colegio de san Lorenzo BSBA Major in

Human Resources Development and working as a HUMAN RESOUCE/

LEGAL ASSISTANT, of Sangalang & Gaerlan Business Lawyers, is

leadership and management. I’ve learned how to manage people, the

importance between the management and the employees as well as their

cultures and behaviors because as a Human Resource it is not only a job or

title that matters but it is how you balance or handled the positive and

negative areas of the organization. My experiences in my internship are the

following:

1. Implementing policies based on the labor code of the Philippines

2. Making a Payroll of every Employees base on labor standards

3. Motivate people for giving them rewards and recognized their good jobs

4. Recruiting- interviewing the new applicants

5. Training – for new employees on their duties and responsibility of

position that they applied for, rollout of rules and regulation of the

company (POLICIES) the coverage, guidelines, policy procedures, and

Offenses/Penalties.

6. Work Life Balance- as an HR of our company I organize/planning

activities like thanksgiving Celebration, Company Outing, ect.

As an internship student of Colegio de San Lorenzo, BSBA Major in Human

resources development, and working as HUMAN RESOUCES/LEGAL

ASSISTANT, in Sangalang & Gaerlan Business Lawyers, the importance of

internship is to integrate the knowledge talents and treasures learned in school,

and apply professionally to the company that I worked, SANGALANG

&GAERLAN BUSINESS LAWYERS for the past 320 Hrs. I’ve learned how to

handle and balance the cultural behavior of the top management and employees

either its positive or negative situation, and how to implement the rules and

regulation of the company with the training and development for new employees

compensation and benefits for the employees based on the labor standards of

the Philippines, Issuing the MEMORANDUM for those employees who did not

comply or violate the company policy, Organizing and Planning the events like

Christmas party, thanksgiving celebration, outreach program, and company

outing, ect. Drafting policies and recommending policies to managers and

partners of the firm.

Founder’s Brief Profile

Atty. Apollo X.C.S. Sangalang (the Founder) has been practicing law for more than 20

years. He was born in Lucena City in 1968 and grew up in Candelaria, Quezon

(Province). He is a Catholic Christian.

He passed the 1994 Bar Examination. He studied law at the University of the

Philippines, College of Law, Diliman, Quezon City. He took up his pre-law (BS

What is a Business Lawyer?

I get mixed reactions every time I introduce myself as a BUSINESS LAWYER.

"Oh, you mean corporate lawyer, right?" or something like that is the usual reply.

Some would ask me directly "what's a business lawyer?" or "what does a business

lawyer do?" I kind of like the introduction because it's a good opener. It's an effective

way to start

a conversation. However, there are plenty of occasions when I don't have the luxury of

time for a conversation or even for small talk. And somehow I feel sort of misunderstood

because people don't really understand what it is that I do as a lawyer.

Luckily, I came across a great article written by business lawyer Joe Kafrouni while I

was trying to find references for my own article on the subject. Then, I said to myself I'll

just "share" Joe's article to people who might be interested in knowing what a business

lawyer is, and what a business lawyer do.

Joe Kafrouni says it best, "...a good business lawyer helps business people with

the laws that apply to their businesses. It's the role of the business lawyer to

guide and protect their clients - who are business owners and managers - so that

they can get on with what they do best, run their business."

So, is a business lawyer the same as a "corporate lawyer"?

In many ways, they are. But the primary areas of focus of business lawyers are the laws

applicable to "small businesses". That's why in the U.S., business lawyers are also

called "small business attorneys". In the Philippines, small business is synonymous to

our SMEs or small and medium enterprises.

Part IV – Conclusion and Recommendation

Internship is a vital part of our curriculum. It helps students, specially me to

see the real world of my course when I get to graduate next year. In school,

our professors teach us the theories in relation to our respective courses.

However, with the internship, our temporary companies teach us the reality.

In our studies, we are thought of the information necessary to survive in the

real world however, in the internship, it teaches us on how to do it considering

the other circumstances such as government employees, third party clients

etc.

As intern, I learned that mastery of the law, rules and regulations is a plus in

the field of specialization. Without the said mastery, it would be very difficult

for new graduates to apply their learnings since most of SME’s owners rely

heavily on it HR.

Thus, it is most important for every student, not only in BSBA, to have

internship programs so they may experience the real world and would not be

shocked when they landed on a specific job after graduation. Hence,

internship is an important factor for every college student to feel and set their

expectations on the real world.
