Remove Transmission
START BY:

a) remove fuel tank

b) remove fan drive

c) remove transmission oil and scavenge pump

d) remove transmission oil filter base

e) remove parking brake rotochamber

1. Remove the oil from the transmission.

2. Loosen nut (2) and tighten bolt (1) against the frame of the machine. Tighten nut (2). Repeat this
Step for the nut and bolt on the other side of the flywheel housing. This will support the back end of
the engine when the transmission is removed.

3. Put identification on three oil lines (4) for correct installation.

4. Disconnect oil lines (4) from the relief control valve (5). Put plugs and caps on all openings.

5. Disconnect clip (3) from the transmission.

6. Disconnect two clips (6) from the side of the transmission case.

7. Remove bolts (7) and slide retainer (8) away from the transmission case.

8. Loosen three nuts (10). Move couplings (9) away from the transmission. Disconnect three control
cables (11) from the transmission.

9. Remove elbow (12) and plate (13) from the radiator.

10. Fasten chains and a hoist to the transmission as shown. Remove the nuts that hold the
transmission to the differential housing.

11. Remove bolts (14) that hold the transmission to the flywheel housing.

12. Remove transmission (15) from the machine. The weight of the transmission is approximately
2250 lb. (1021 kg).

Install Transmission

1. Make sure O-ring seal (1) is in position on the transmission. Install transmission (2) on the
machine. The weight of the transmission is approximately 2250 lb. (1019 kg).

2. Install bolts (3) that hold the transmission to the flywheel housing. Install the nuts that hold the
transmission to the differential housing.

3. Install elbow (4) and plate (6). Do not tighten nut (5) until the fuel tank is installed.

4. Connect three transmission control cables (9) to the transmission control valve. Make sure O-ring
seals (8) are in position on couplings (6). Put clean SAE 30 oil on each O-ring seal. Slide couplings
(7) into position in the transmission.

5. Tighten nuts (10) to hold the couplings in position. Install retainer (11) and the bolts that hold it in
place.

6. Connect two clips (12) to the side of the transmission case.

7. Make sure the seven O-ring seals are in position on the back side of relief control valve (13). Put
clean SAE 30 oil on each O-ring seal. Install relief control valve (13) on the transmission.

8. Connect clip (14) to the transmission as shown.

9. Connect three oil lines (15) to the relief control valve.

10. Loosen nut (17). Loosen bolt (16) so that it is away from the frame. Tighten nut (17). Repeat this
step for the nut and bolt on the other side of the flywheel housing.

END BY:

a) install parking brake rotochamber

b) install transmission oil filter base

c) install transmission oil and scavenge pump

d) install fan drive

e) install fuel tank

Disassemble Transmission

START BY:

a) remove transmission

1. Remove plate (1) from the transmission case.

2. Remove directional selector link (2) and modulation link (3) from their respective spools.

3. Remove plates (4) and (5) from the hydraulic control valves.

4. Move four sleeves (6) free of the hydraulic control valves.

5. Install tooling (A) on the hydraulic control group. Remove bolts (7) and (8) which fasten the
control group to the planetary group. The weight of the hydraulic control group is 90 lb. (41 kg).

6. Remove four sleeves (6) from the transmission case. Put identification on the sleeves as to their
location for assembly purposes.

7. Remove O-ring seals (9) from sleeves.

8. Remove eight bolts (11) from manifold and eleven nuts (10) from studs. Remove manifold (12).
Remove O-ring seals from manifold.

9. Turn the transmission in the vertical position as shown and remove O-ring seals (13) from the
housing assembly. Remove two bolts (14) and (15).

10. Install tooling (B) and a hoist on housing assembly and remove O-ring seal (16).

NOTE: For easier planetary transmission removal make an alignment of lever (18) with piston
assembly (17).

11. Remove the planetary transmission from the case. Weight is 850 lb. (386 kg). Put the transmission
on the floor in the horizontal position. Install tooling (B) and a hoist on end plate (19). Lift the
transmission and put it in the vertical position on blocks as shown.

12. Install tooling (B) and a hoist on support assembly (20).

13. Lift the support assembly up high enough to bend the locks away from bolts (22). Remove bolts
(22), retainer (23) and locks that fasten carrier to gear (21).

14. Bend lock (25) away from nut (24).

15. Remove nut (24) from support assembly with tool (C).

NOTE: Hold the support assembly while it is in the press so it will not become damaged when the
gear is removed.

16. Put the gear and support assembly on a press. With tooling (D) remove support assembly from
gear. The weight of the gear is 55 lb. (25 kg). Remove bearing cone (26) from gear.

17. Install tooling (E) on gear (21) and remove bearing cup (27).

18. Remove spacer (28) from the gear.

19. Turn the gear over on the opposite side and install tooling (E) and remove bearing cup (29).

20. Remove ring (30) from the gear.

21. Remove spacer (31) and bearing cone (33) from support assembly (32).

22. Remove carrier (34) from inside the support assembly. A hammer and a punch can be used to
remove the carrier.

23. Remove seal (35) from carrier (34).

24. If necessary, remove the bearing (36) from the support.

25. Install tooling (B) and a hoist on end plate (19) and lower the transmission assembly to the floor.
The transmission is to be turned over.

26. Install tooling (B) and hoist on housing assembly (38). Lift transmission assembly and put in the
vertical position. Remove bolts (37).

27. Lift housing assembly (38) enough to remove four plungers (40) and four springs (39).

28. Remove housing assembly (38). The weight is 86 lb. (39 kg).

29. Remove four O-ring seals (43) from the housing assembly.

30. If necessary, remove four pins (42) and dowel (41) from the housing.

31. Remove ring (44) from flange assembly with tool (F). Remove cage (45) from the transmission
assembly.

32. Remove ring (46) and bearing (47) from cage.

33. Remove dowels (48) from housing (49).

34. Bend the locks (50) away from bolts (52). Remove bolts and locks from the flange assembly.

35. Remove thirty bolts (51) and flange assembly (53) from transmission assembly.

36. If necessary, remove dowels (54) from flange.

NOTICE

Keep the disc assemblies and plates for the individual clutches in their
original sequences with their respective clutch housing. The original
disc assemblies are made with different friction material for different
clutches and can not be mixed. Also some disc assemblies and clutch
plates can be used again only in their original sequence. See GUIDE
FOR REUSABLE PARTS Form SEBF8013 for more information.

37. Remove five disc assemblies (55) and four plates (56). This is the parking brake assembly.

38. Remove gear (57) from the transmission assembly.

39. Remove piston (58) and cage assembly (59) from the transmission assembly.

40. Put the piston and cage assembly in position in the press. Install steel blocks as shown and put the
five springs and retainer in compression.

41. Remove ring (60), retainer (61) and springs (62).

42. Remove piston (58) from cage assembly (59).

43. Remove bearing (63) from the cage. Remove ring (64) and the O-ring seal that is under the ring
from the cage. Remove seal ring (65) from the cage.

44. Remove piston assembly (17) from the transmission assembly.

45. Turn the piston assembly over and remove inserts (66) from the piston.

46. Remove balls (69), piston (67), six disc assemblies and six plates (68). This is the number 8 clutch
pack.

47. Remove ring (70) with tool (F). Remove hub assembly (71).

48. Install tooling (B) and a hoist in position and remove carrier assembly (72).

49. Remove the ring that holds bearing (73) in position in the carrier housing. Turn the carrier housing
over and remove bearing from carrier housing with a punch and hammer.

50. If necessary, remove dowels (74) from carrier housing.

51. Drive pins (76) into shafts (75) with a hammer and punch.

52. Remove shafts (75) from the carrier housing and the pins from shafts.

53. Remove gears (79), washers (77) and two bearing assemblies (78) per gear.

54. Remove housing assembly (80), dowels (81) and springs (82) from the transmission assembly.

55. If necessary, remove inserts (83) and pins and dowels (84) from piston.

56. Remove gear (85) and five disc assemblies (86) and four plates (87). This is the number 7 clutch
pack.

57. Remove piston (88) from housing. Remove seal rings (89) and (90) from the piston.

58. Remove housing assembly (91). Remove the dampers from the housing if necessary.

59. Remove springs (92). Remove two disc assemblies (93) and plate (94) from the housing. This is
the number 6 clutch pack.

60. Remove gear (95) and piston (96) from assembly.

61. Remove seal rings (97) and (98) from the piston.

62. Remove housing (99) from assembly.

64. Remove springs (101) from piston and dowels (103) from housing.

65. Remove two disc assemblies (102) and plate (104) from the top of the piston. This is the number
five clutch pack.

66. Remove gear (105) and piston (106) from housing.

67. Remove seal rings (107) and (108) from the piston.

68. Install tooling (B) and a hoist on housing (109). Install tooling (G) as shown to fasten piston to
housing. Remove the housing and piston as a unit. The weight of the assembly is 60 lb. (27 kg).

69. Remove tooling (B) and turn the assembly on the opposite side. Remove tooling (G) and piston
(110).

70. Remove seal rings (111) and (112) from the piston.

71. Remove springs (116) and dowels (114) from housing.

72. Remove three disc assemblies (113) and two plates (115) from gear. This is the number 4 clutch
pack.

When the assembly is turned over, the planetary gears will slide out
approximately 3.0 in. (76.2 mm). The assembly will not come apart at
this time.

73. Install tooling (B) on assembly with two 1/2"-13 NC x 4 in. long bolts. Install a hoist and slowly
turn the assembly over and put in position on blocks. The weight of the assembly is 209 lb. (95 kg).

74. Remove end plate (117) and springs (118) from housing.

75. Remove three disc assemblies (119) and two plates (120) from housing. This is the number 3
clutch pack.

76. Remove ring (121) from shaft with tool (F). Remove retainer (122).

77. Remove the carrier assembly (123) with two men. The weight of the assembly is 51 lb. (23 kg).

78. Drive pins (125) into shafts (124) with a hammer and punch.

79. Remove shafts (124) from the carrier assembly and the pins from shafts.

80. Remove gears (128), washers (126) and two bearing assemblies (127) per gear.

81. Remove gear (129) and piston (130) from housing assembly.

82. Remove seal rings (131) and (132) from piston.

83. Remove housing assembly (133) from the transmission assembly.

84. Remove four dowels (134) from housing if necessary.

85. Hit two pins (135) with a hammer and punch until the pins are even with the surface of the carrier.

86. Put ring (137) in compression and remove gear (136) and ring (137).

87. Put the assembly in the horizontal position as shown and remove ring (139) from shaft with tool
(F). Remove gear (138). The weight of assembly is 64 lb. (29 kg).

92. Put the carrier assembly in the vertical position.

93. Bend locks (147) from bolts and remove bolts and locks.

94. Remove cage (149) and cage assembly (148) from the carrier assembly.

95. Remove seal ring (150) from cage assembly (148).

96. Remove ring (151) and bearing (152) from carrier assembly.

97. Drive pins (154) into shafts with a hammer and punch so gears (153) can be removed.

98. Remove the shafts from the carrier assembly and pins (154) from the shafts.

99. Remove gears (153), washers (155) and two bearing assemblies (156) per gear.

Assemble Transmission

1. Inspect all transmission components and make replacements if necessary.

2. Install two bearing assemblies (3) in each of the eight carrier gears (2).

3. Install gears (2) in carrier housing with washers (1) on each side of gears.

NOTICE

Be sure the rubber in the pins that holds shafts (4) in the carrier is not
damaged. If the rubber is damaged, a replacement of the pins must be
made.

4. Install shafts (4) in carrier housing to hold gears in place. Make sure the holes in the shafts are in
alignment with the holes in the carrier. Install the pins (5) that hold the shafts in the carrier.

5. Install ring (8) on bearing (6). Install the bearing and ring in carrier with the notch (7) in the bearing
on the top side.

NOTE: There is a correct method to make the new rings ready for installation. Use your hands on
each end of the ring to pull the ends several inches by each other. Figure 1. Use care to keep the ring
shape like a circle. This makes an even bend (or ring "set") all the way around the ring.

NOTE: When the ring is in the groove, the notches in the ends must be fully engaged with each other
so the ring will not make contact with the edge of the cage bore. That is, the notches must be fully
engaged and the ends must be together. See Figure 2.

NOTE: Do not bend the ring as shown in Figure 3. This does not make an even bend all the way
around the ring.

6. Install ring (10) on cage assembly (9).

NOTICE

Make sure the ball (11) in cage is in alignment with the notch (7) in
bearing when the cage assembly is installed.

7. Install cage assembly (9) in bearing.

8. Put cage (13) on carrier and install locks (12) and bolts. Bend the locks on bolts.

9. Install shaft assembly (15) in the carrier assembly. Install gear (14) on shaft. It may be necessary to
turn the carrier gears so gear (14) will go in its seat. The weight of the shaft assembly is 60 lb. (27
kg).

10. Heat bearing (16) to a temperature of 275°F (135°C). Install bearing on cage (18).

11. Put cage and gear into position in gear (17) and install ring that holds gear and bearing in place.

12. Install spacer (19) on shaft.

13. Install gear (20) and ring in position on shaft with tool (A).

14. Put the carrier and shaft assembly in the vertical position on blocks. The weight is 64 lb. (29 kg).

15. Install ring (23) on the carrier housing.

16. Put the ring in compression and install gear (22). Release the ring to hold the gear in position.

17. Hit two pins (21) with a hammer and punch until the pins are even with the bottom surface of the
carrier.

18. Install four dowels (24) in housing (25) to a height of .62 in. (15.7 mm).

19. Install housing (25) in position on assembly.

20. Install seal rings (27) and (28) on piston (26).

21. Install piston (26) and gear (29) in assembly.

22. Install two bearing assemblies (32) in each of the six carrier gears (31).

23. Install gears (31) in carrier housing with washers (30) on each side of gears.

NOTICE

24. Install shafts (33) in carrier housing to hold gears (31) in place. Make sure the holes in the shafts
are in alignment with the holes in the carrier. Install pins (34) in carrier housing with a hammer and
punch.

25. Install carrier assembly (35) in position with two men. The weight of the carrier assembly is 51 lb.
(23 kg).

26. Install retainer (36) and ring (37) with tool (A).

number three clutch pack.

28. Install springs (41) in position on piston and end plate (40) on housing.

NOTICE

When the assembly is turned over the planetary gears can slide out
approximately 3.0 in. (76.2 mm). The assembly will not come apart.

29. Install tooling (B) on end plate with two 1/2"- 13 NC x 4 in. long bolts. Install a hoist and slowly
turn the assembly over and put in position on blocks. The weight of an assembly is 209 lb. (95 kg).

NOTICE

Be sure the rubber in the pins that holds shafts (80) in the carrier is not
damaged. If the rubber is damaged, a replacement of the pins must be
made.

55. Install shafts (80) in carrier housing to hold gears in position. Make sure the holes in shafts are in
alignment with the holes in the carrier. Install the pins (81) carrier with a hammer and punch.

56. Turn the carrier housing over and install two dowels (84) to a height of .28 in. (7.11 mm).

57. Install bearing (83) in the carrier housing with the notch (82) in the bearing on the top side. Install
ring to hold the bearing in position in carrier housing.

73. Install four dowels (111) in flange (112) to a height of .28 in. (7.1 mm).

74. Put flange (112) in position on gear. Make sure the dowels in the flange are in alignment with the
gear and the piston and cage assembly.

75. Install bolts (113). Tighten bolts to a torque of 38 ± 2 lb.ft. (52 ± 3 N·m).

76. Install locks (114) and bolts. Bend the locks against bolts.

77. Lower the temperature of bearing (116). Install bearing (116) in cage (117) and install spiral ring.
The notch in bearing is on the bottom side.

78. Put the cage in place on top of the parking brake plate.

NOTE: Make sure the dowel (115) in flange (112) is in alignment with the notch in bearing (116).

79. Install ring (118) on flange with tool (A).

80. Install dowel (119) in housing to a height of .53 in. (13.5 mm). Install four pins (120). Dimension
"Y" from the top of housing to the top of pin is 2 in. (50.8 mm).

81. Install the four O-ring seals (121) on housing.

82. Turn housing assembly over and install tooling (B) and a hoist. Put housing assembly in place and
install springs (122) and plungers (123). Remove tooling (B).

83. Install bolts (124) and (125). Tighten bolts (124) to a torque of 85 ± 5 lb.ft. (115 ± 7 N·m).

84. Put oil in all the clutch ports. Use tool (F) and air with pressure of 100 - 150 psi (690 - 1030 kPa)
to check the function of the clutch pistons. There must be 1/8 - 1/4 in. (3 - 6 mm) of movement in
each piston. If a piston does not move, it can have a broken seal or is assembled wrong. The
transmission must be disassembled to find the cause.

85. See photo B55352X1 to check clutch assemblies 3 through 7.

86. Put the transmission on the floor in the horizontal position. Install tooling (B) and a hoist on end
plate (40). Lift the transmission and put it in the vertical position on blocks as shown.

mm) from the end of support. The diameter of the bearing must be 1.6230 ± .0015 in. (41.224 ± .038
mm) after installation in the support.

88. Install seal (128) on carrier (127).

89. Put carrier (127) in support and with tool (E) install it in position.

90. Heat bearing cone (129) to a temperature of 275°F (135°C) and install on support. Install spacer
(128).

spacer is installed next to the spiral ring. If it is installed backward, bearing cup (134) can not be
installed in gear.

105. Put the transmission on the floor in the horizontal position. Install tooling (B) and a hoist on end
plate (40). Lift the transmission and put it in the vertical position.
