IMHO, the best chess books are the ones you enjoy reading. However the question
probably means the best for learning. The best book is My Best Games by Alekhine.
Although he sometimes displays delusions of grandeur, he games and annotations
are fun.

There are lots of good books written for players of varying skill.

What’s important is to take the time to really get the most out of them and read a
variety of books on chess - the endgame, tactics, best games, some opening books but
don’t spend too much time on this (as it’s not the essence of chess, it’s just
memorising).

It’s important to have a really good library covering these topics and more (e.g.
strategy, positional chess…). It also depends on what level you are at as a player.
