UNIT 9
Exercise 9.1
1. The science of chemistry has advanced a great deal in the nineteenth century.
2. I always want to visit other countries, but I haven’t had to opportunity to travel
extensively. I went to the Netherlands six years ago, but I haven’t gone anywhere since
then.
3. Do not skip class again for the rest of the term. You have already missed too many
classes.
4. Up to now, Mrs. Puff has given our class three tests.
5. So far this week, I have had two tests and a quiz.
6. A : Are you taking Biology 101 in this semester?
B : No, I have already taken it. I took it last semester. This semester I’m in 102.
7. I have known my colleague for many years.
8. I have written my wife letters every other day for the last two months.
9. Last winter, I have seen a real snowman for the first time in my life.

Exercise 9.2
1. Libraries today are different from those in the 1800s. For example, the contents of
libraries has changed greatly through the years. In the 1800s, libraries has been simply
collections of books. However, today most libraries has become multimedia centers
that contains tapes, computers, disks, films, magazines, music, and paintings. The role
of the library in society also has changed. In the 1800s, libraries has been open only
to certain people, such as scholars or the wealthy. Today libraries serve everyone.
2. In the last hundred years, traveling has become much and very comfortable. In the 19th
century, it has taken two or three months to cross North America by covered wagon.
The trip has been very rough and often dangerous. Things has changed a great deal in
the last hundred and fifty years. Now you can fly from New York to Los Angeles in a
matter of hours.
3. Things has changed a great deal at Caltrech Inc. when we first have started working
here three years ago, the company has only had six employees. Since then we have
expanded to include more than 2000 full time workers.
4. This mountain has never been climbed by anyone. Several mountaineers have tried to
reach the top, but nobody have ever succeeded. The climb is extremely difficult and
many people have died trying to reach the summit.
5. I have never visited Africa, but I have traveled to South America several times. The
last time I went to South America, I have visited Brazil and Peru. I spent two weeks in
the Amazone, hiked for a week near Machu Piccu, and flew over the Nazca Lines.

1. A : Do you like the movie “Mission Impossible”?


B : I don’t know. I have never seen that movie.
2. My father and my father in-law have known each other for over fifteen years. We
still get together once a week.
3. Robert is an extraordinary scientist. He wrote ten scientific articles in the last year.
One day he’ll be as famous as Newton.
4. I haven’t had so much fun, since I was a kid.
5. I have told Emily to stay on the path while she was hiking, but she has wandered
off into the forest and has bitten by snake.
6. Listen, Daniel, I don’t care if you missed the train this morning, you have been late
to work too many times. You are fired!
7. Raymond is from Canberra, which is hundreds of miles from coast, so he has never
seen the ocean. He should come and visit us in Sydney.
8. It is a pity! Linda has dreamed of going to California before she died, but she didn’t
make it. She saw the ocean.
9. Tony can’t believe how much you have changed since the last time I saw you. You
have grown at least a foot!
10. This tree was planted by the settlers who has found our city seven hundred years
ago.
Exercise 9.4.
1. A : How did the accident happen?
B : I was going too fast and couln’t stop in time.

B : Yes, I have bought it a few weeks ago.
4. A : I can’t talk to you right now. You can see I’m very busy.

B : No, I have an interest in football, but I gave it.
7. A : I’m sorry I’m late.
B : That’s OK. I didn’t wait too long.
