Date: 03 October 2018 Submission Date: 12 October 2018

1. A cubical element is subjected to the following state of stress.

100 0 0 

 ij   0  20 0 
 0 0  40 

Assuming the material to be homogeneous and isotropic, determine the principal shear
strains and the octahedral shear strain if E  2  10 5 MPa and   0.25 .
2. Compute Lame’s coefficients  and  for

a) Steel having E  207 10 6 kPa and   0.3 .

b) Concrete having E  2810 6 kPa and   0.2 .

3. For the following strain matrix at a point, determine the stress matrix
 0.001 0  0.002 

 ij   0  0.003 0.003 
 0.002 0.003 0 

Given that E  207 10 6 kPa and G  80 10 6 kPa

4. A thin rubber sheet is enclosed between two fixed hard plates (Figure 1). Friction between
the rubber and steel faces is negligible. If the rubber plate is subjected to stresses  x and  y

as shown, determine the strains  xx and  yy . Also determine the stress  zz .

 ij  50 120 0
 0 0 0

Determine the principal strains.

6. A member made of isotropic bronze ( E  82.6 GPa and   0.35 ) is subjected to a state of
plane strain. Determine  zz ,  xx ,  yy and  xy if  xx  90 MPa ,  yy  50 MPa and  xy  70 MPa .
