Your Dreams Come True
ast August 10, 2010, teachers and students from three countries gathered together at Alliance Wedding Hall,
L Daegu and shared friendship with each other. They took part in a series of cultural exchange programs.
Wonhwa Girl’s Highschool(Korea), Hijiyama Girls’High(Japan), and Seri-Puteri National Secondary School(Malaysia)
joined in the event. Although they were all from Asia, the people of three nations had their own cultures. The scene
in which students talked sometimes in English and other times in their mother tongues looked like a smaller version
of the world. It was a mosaic glistening in seven different colors just like a rainbow.
We now can meet people from varieties of countries in the subway stations as well as in the buses, which might
give the older generation an unfamiliar feeling. Yet, to the younger generation who absorb everything like a sponge,
it is becoming a part of their lives. During the event of three countries, the students of Wonhwa greeted visitors from

foreign nations and played important roles as hosts for homestays. In turn, students from other countries tried to
understand and accept ours. All those leave us something to think over.
Have you ever seen a rainbow after a hard rain? It has its own peculiar seven colors, which together make a
harmony at the same time. You can find a similarity between the rainbow and what you see when students mix
together. If you look at the students closer, they show you their own colors. But if you step back for a while, they
form a harmony of hues. What you can see from them is a beauty of diversity. When it comes to cultural exchanges,
you should not overwhelm other cultures with yours and you’d rather let them shine in their own colors.
From now on we should live together without making a distinction, and we have to lead our lives admitting and
respecting others. Countless students will have been drawing mosaics with the colors of the rainbow in a cradle of
learning called Wonhwa. They will truly open a new age when the world coexists. I feel endless joy as I see people
around the globe participate in the journey to mutual prosperity. I really thank all of you, teachers and students from
three countries, and suggest that we build up our strengths to live together as cosmopolitans. And I hope that our
Wonhwa can be the place where a rainbow forms and your dreams come true.

This year, three students of Wonhwa glorified their school. Ahn Yehri(3rd grade) got a perfect score at TOEIC. Jung Jiwon(2nd grade)
won the U.S. president Obama prize. And Lee Sunmin(3rd grade) got an almost perfect score at TOEFL. All of them are not so much
natural-born geniuses as hard workers. Ahn has learned from everything around her. Her life itself is full of studying English. She reads
books in English. She watches movies or TV dramas without subtitles. Though she already got the best score, she still studies hard
before TOEIC. Ahn wants to be an architect and plans to earn a lot of money to help those in need. Things are the same as Lee
Sunmin’s. She has prepared for taking TOEFL for a long time. Officially the best score for TOEFL IBT is 120. But the test management
company, ETS, practically doesn’t give testees the full 120. Lee received evenly same score(29) for each of the sections of reading,
listening, speaking, and writing(116 in total). So you can freely say her score is perfect. And Jung Jiwon is a real entertainer. She not only
has a good English proficiency, but she has fascinating dance skills with her celestial voice. What’ more, she has endless passion for her
future, so she always tries hard. Those are what make the trio special.

Malaysia!
Aug 7, four of the UNESCO team
members(Ihnkyong, Sumin, Yehbin, and I)
waited in front of the school for our four
Malaysian friends from Sekolah Seri-Puteri
to come. We were all very excited and
nervous to see them. Seri-Puteri’s four
students(Nasuha, Muneeba, Afiqah, and
Nurnadia) finally arrived at 4:30. There was
a warm welcoming ceremony at the
moment by our principal and volunteers
from Wonhwa. After that, the girls split up
into two groups and went to the houses they
were assigned to.
The next day, we took a city tour around
Daegu. We first went to Bongmu Leisure &
Sports Park to observe Korean butterflies’
natural habitat. We ate one of the most
famous Korean dishes, bibimbap. And then
we harvested tomatoes and made Korean
traditional egg containers made of dried
straw at Guahm Farm Stay. About an hour
later we visited Bangjja Yugi Museum
where you can see some conventional
brassware. After the city tour we headed for
Keimyung University, where a famous
Korean drama ‘Boys over Flowers’ was
filmed. Although it was hot and humid,
once the girls saw the gorgeous campus,
they all got excited. After the campus tour
we all went to Homeplus to grab some
dinner.
The third day, an English Camp was going
on at Wonhwa. 2 hours at the camp
including the school tour was a rare
experience for the Malaysian friends. Free
time was given this afternoon, so we went
to the most famous marketplace in Daegu,
Seomun Market. The market was full of

exclusive items including fabrics the Malay
girls wanted for their traditional clothes,
souvenir key rings, and socks on which
Korean celebrities were printed. To avoid
melting hot sunray, we escaped to an ice
rink. 3 hours of skating made us totally
forget about the hot weather! The last stop
was where all teenagers go — downtown.
We shopped, ate street food, and went to
karaoke. We were all surprised at how much
the Malaysian friends knew about all the
lyrics and dances for Korean pops!
Gyeongju was the last schedule Wonhwa
prepared. We visited one of the most
famous temples in Korea — Bulguksa. And
we went to a tomb for a king of the Shilla
Dynasty, Chunmachong, and the Orgel(a
music box) Museum. After we got back to
Daegu, we all gathered at Alliance Wedding
Hall together and held a special event of the
Night for 3 Nations, Korea, Japan, and
Malaysia. Three schools from Korea, Japan,
and Malaysia each showed their own
traditional dance and talents. After the
ceremony, the hall was filled with cries
because of the wonderful memories they
shared during the past three days.
The last day, the UNESCO team went to
the hotel and took our farewell of the Malay
friends. We all had a strange feeling that we
had been more than just friends during the
days we spent together. I hope this trip to
Korea would be a memorable one for
Nasuha, Muneeba, Afiqah, and Nurnadia.
As long as we don’t forget the friendship we
shared, the relationship between Wonhwa
and Seri-Puteri will last forever.

On June 14, the Daegu Athletic Competition of Varsities sponsored by the

Daegu Education Bureau was held at the Daegu Stadium. To enhance
physical strengths of students and cultivate people with sound mind, the
competition was aimed at maximizing educational effects of varsity teams,
improving sociality and personality of students, and promoting
participation and interests in sports.
The competition started with field sports. There were javelin throw, long
jump, and high jump going on almost simultaneously. One of the 2nd
graders, Jae Eunyeong participated in javelin and was recorded as the
third. Lee Hyeyeong, a 3rd grader, was also ranked as the third in her long jump. Second
grader Kim Jeongah took the 6th place in high jump. And then track races began. There were

100m, 400m, and 800m races, in which our runners produced really good results. In the 400m

totally broke the record. As a result, athletes from Wonhwa could win the championship in the

Jungang Education Visits Wonhwa
One of the famous counsellors for going on to universities, Lee
Manki, the director from Uway Jungang Education, visited Wonhwa
Girls’ High to make a special lecture for the third graders. As you
well know, he is such a remarkable figure in the sphere of the
Internet on-line lectures. He once was one of the most famous
lecturers for teaching Korean and now is, like I said before, a person
taking charge in the whole matters of university entrance for senior
high school students all over the country. He even wrote many
helpful books for them.
Let me tell you the four points of his statements: First, he stressed
that rolling admissions lots of universities now use can be great
chances to enter them easily. It means that a student’s highschool
record is getting more important. Next, it is recommended that the
students take part in a series of volunteer work. You can be helped by
doing so since people concerned with the university admission want
to know not only your school grades, but they also need to check
whether you have good personalities, creativities, potentialities, and
so forth. Another thing he mentioned was the importance of the EBS
texts gets bigger and bigger for someone preparing for the scholastic
aptitude test. Last but not the least, he suggested that the students
practice writing essays for themselves.
The lecture was such a significant time for the
students. It was so helpful and instructive that the
students couldn’t miss anything from what he said.

Plays on
128 Beats
Rock bands of Wonhwa, ‘128 Beats’
and ‘the Novice’ held a concert at an
indi-cafe somewhere in downtown, on
last January 1(Sat). They played their
favorites like ‘Returns’ and ‘Hot Issue.’
On top of that, teacher Kim Hakwoo in
charge of math played a classic guitar
singing his favorite folk numbers.
Besides, some more students
participated in the performances and
enjoyed it together. It all started from
6pm and there even were wives of
teacher Kim and James at the event,
followed by the students from Wonhwa
and some of their family members.
Members of the bands said hi to those
they knew at the waiting room behind
the stage. When it was time, two
people from each group, Park
Hyeonah(128 Beats) and Hong
Soghi(the Novice) greeted the
audience on the stage. They
performed well enough to earn thunder
cheers from the audience.

SummerEnglish could have 40 members for this year.
There were diverse programs prepared. It
all started from introduction, followed by
school tour, groups division, sessions for
singing, games of volleyball, times for
drawing, contests for drawing and singing,
presentations, and sessions for cooking.
There were two native teachers, James with
Max and they helped the participants use as
much English as they could. And all the
participants were divided into 2 teams: the

the second time from last year. After the
2009 camp, the popularity of it has
increased in Daegu. So there were many
applicants from middle schools. Through
some paper investigations, we chose 60
students to interview. The evaluation was
done based on the criteria of participants’
English language proficiency, initiative,
positive thinking, and creativity. Then we

On September 4, Wonhwa students took
the Sim TOEIC test, sponsored by the
YBM/Sisa. Because a lot of universities
are asking students for their scores
from English proficiency tests, there
were many students who applied for the
test. After the test we, the Wonhwa Star
reporters, had interviews with some
testees and heard about their feelings
about the test. “I think it was really a
great experience taking the test. It was actually my first time
taking TOEIC so I didn’t have a chance to guess how the difficulty
of the test would be. But because I’ve taken the test now, I get to
understand how the test flows. So it would be really helpful next
time I take the real test,” said one first grader. Even
though students will have a hard time during the test,
taking it is clearly getting more popular these days.

Camp
Red and the Blue. There were 4 small
groups in each team. All the students were
given a T-shirt each. The Reds received red-
colored shirts and the Blues, blue-colored
ones.
First day, everyone seemed to feel
awkward. But, the participants getting to
know each other, the mood became easy. At
the end of the class, almost all the students
became friends with each other. Second
day, there was a self introduction time,
when each group made its poster with
colored pencils to let others know about it.
All those programs were progressed using
only English. Some of the students felt
hardships for they weren’t used to saying
only in English. But they tried very hard
and, slowly but steadily, their English
improved. Third day, students played volley
ball at the auditorium. The girls didn’t play
it before so there were some difficulties
playing. Nevertheless, they really enjoyed
the game. Fourth day, there was a singing
contest and every one of them could have a
chance to be on the stage. They even got a
change to play real electric guitars and base
guitars. They really looked curious about
those kinds of instruments. The last day was
for cooking. The Blue team took charge in
cooking spaghetties following the recipe of
Max, and the Reds in making hamburgers
according to the cuisine by James. After
they prepared their dishes, they could serve
themselves.
There was a big closing event. All the
participants were given certificates for
completing the camp. Many became closer
to each other. Some of the passionate
participants even said they would
absolutely come to Wonhwa next year.

KNUMentoring
On May 15, a career development team from Kyungpook National University
came to Wonhwa and held an event for sophomores. After a competition, 100
students were chosen to be in it. At first the mood of the mentoring was somewhat
heavy because the students were from various classes and they didn’t know much
about each other. But the mentors from KNU tried to break the ice and made a
nickname for each student, which had a relation to the student’s dream. For example,
if you are a student who want to be a doctor, then you shall be called ‘Doctor
somebody.’ Then we had a time to introduce ourselves and listened carefully what
others said. In the second phase of the event, we had a personality test. This was
supposed to let us know about ourselves. The test was based on the Holland Codes
which was specialized for people who want to find their best jobs. The characteristics
were divided into 6 types: ‘R’ means ‘Realistic’ for people who are healthy, honest,
and sincere. ‘I’ means ‘Investigative’ for people who are logical, good at math or science. ‘A’ means ‘Artistic’ for people who are
imaginative, free, and good at art field. ‘S’ means ‘Social’ for people who are kind and love to be friends with others. ‘E’ means
‘Enterprising’ for people who are passionate, competitive, persuasive, and like to be leaders. Finally, ‘C’ means ‘Conventional’
for people who have responsibility and don’t like change, being cautious. After we found out which type we were, we took part
in an auction. The event was planned to let the students grow their senses of economy. After about 6 hours, all the participants
could make out designs more specifically for their future. The KNU mentoring gave us a motivation to advance.

First Graders
Visit Gyeongju :
Train Ourselves
From April 21 to 23, Wonhwa freshmen
took a school field trip to Bomun Youth
Center located in Gyeongju. The students
were welcomed by the staff. A
representative of the students made an
oath of establishing and keeping order.
Meanwhile, the manager of the center
made a few announcements. Because of
his unusually dramatic(!) voice, most of
the students and teachers couldn't stand
laughing. On the second day, all the
students from each class were separated
into 4 groups and were each given an
assignment. There were various
assignments such as escaping from a
maze, throwing darts, solving quizzes,
and participating in a speed game. In the
evening, students had a camp fire and a
talent show session. Some of the teachers
secretly prepared special performances
for the talent show. Teacher Kim Hakwoo

Gyeongdo sang songs playing the guitars.
Teacher Yi Junho sung Jjambbong, the
strangest song ever, for celebrating his
birthday. It was so funny and hilarious
that everybody became unable to breathe.
On the last day, all the students gathered
up at the auditorium and watched a series
of video clips, in which the memories
they made were recorded. For 3 nights
and 2 days, the students experienced so
many things. Through this camp,
Wonhwa freshmen learned the true
meaning of friends and good manners
toward others.

A student-centered counseling center,
‘Wee Class’ was set up at Wonhwa. It was
designed to help students feel comfortable
in school lives. And they can improve their
scores on exams through the counseling
service at Wee Class. There are professional
counselors for students in need. Students
even can get much information about their
future job. You can take an MBTI(Myers-
Briggs Type Indicator) test and decide what
your best job is. And you can browse the
Internet using high quality computers
installed in the center. Sometimes you just
can take a rest in a Korean-styled floor.
There you can read various books being
kept in Wee Class and watch TV through a
full-flat wide LCD panel. What is more,
there is an ‘Ondol’ appliance that can heat
the floor from the bottom. You can drink
some soda or juice here, chatting with your
friends. Anyway the name ‘Wee’ has
something in it. It means ‘We+education’
and ‘We+emotion.’ Based on those
concepts, a special program ‘Best Friends’
was made. Participants of it can go to the
movies, go see a play, and make bars of
soap on their own. But the most important
thing is you can make friends with
someone. Do you feel weary and lonely?

for about 12 hours.

Shine There were many applicants and only 90

students were chosen to be in this event. It
all started with a keynote speech of the
principal. "Because of the admissions
officer system, the importance of reading is
becoming larger these days. I hope all of
you can have more interest in reading in
accordance with the trend," said the
principal. During the event, you can read
for 90 to 110 minutes, having breaks for
10~20 minutes in between. Sometimes
teachers played classical musics and it
failed some participants. It was really hard
for them to stand sleepiness. So student
volunteers had to wake them up at times.
At midnight, participants could have some
gimbabs for snack. After that, students
woke themselves up watching a midnight
movie with a big screen at the English
lecture room. What's more, there was a
session for taking a walk looking for the
stars in the sky. It was something you can't
never forget. After 12 hours of a long way,
which was pretty long, participants wrote a
diary for what they had read, closing the
event.

If you ask any 2nd grader at Wonhwa what
event they remember best, most of them
will reply "The school excursion to Jeju
island!" We went there by ship and it must
be a thrilling experience for the students
because of
prepared excellent talents, but I'd like to
give applause to the teachers. Who'd
wonder the teachers had so much talent?!

2010 Wonhwa Art Exhibition was held from Sep 7 to 11 at Daegu Cultural Center for Students. Please

Athletic Meeting Held
at Wonhwa
The Wonhwa Athletic Meeting was held at
the school on last May 20, 2010. Not
having been held last year because of the
H1N1 flu, all the students were extremely
excited about the event and prepared for it
even before a week. About 1,200 students
in their own class costumes, such as rabbits,
witches, Alices(of Wonderland), maids, etc,
gathered together on the green field. Lots of
people thought it would have been much
better if senior students had participated.
There were a series of sporting events:
relays, hurdles, tied-ankles' races, tug-of-
wars, jumping ropes for groups. Students
did their best and all of them were filled
with fever. The team championship was
given to the 15th class of the second grade.
Things that happened after the games were
quite complicated because winners all
together said the event was awesome but
some of the losers said it was too boring to
wait till the end. Anyway, let's just set aside
some negative responses. The most
important thing is that this absolutely was a
good chance for the students to mix up
together.

at Wonhwa
A history club in Wonhwa, Haneolnubim, held a mock court on
July 12. The court was prepared to awake students' interest in
matters of 'the comfort women during the Japanese colonization.'
The trial assumed a situation where a Japanese history club sued
Wonhwa students for their distributing a video clip showing
Japanese soldiers' evil deeds on Korean women. This trial dealt
not only with the view from Korea, but the view from Japan. So
even lots of official documents from both sides were used as their
evidences. And the presences of the Japanese native teacher,
Okamoto, and Ukie, a virtual Japanese student, were very
students. He took a part in the trial, which added dramatical
tension to the court. All those brand-new tries effectively attracted
students' attention to the matter of 'the comfort women.' In
addition, students got to know that, when it comes to a
complicated problem, they have to think it over from various
standpoints so that they can face whatever troubles them. "That's
what I planned to do. Learning history is not just following what
others think. You've got to see the world with your own eyes
without any prejudice," said Sohn Seonghyuk, a history teacher
and the planner of this event. There must be a peace between
Korea and Japan. We have to maintain it for ever. Therefore, we
have to know the past and we have to tell something good from

Science Quiz Contest actively sharing their opinions and calmly

The 20th Wonhwa Science Quiz Contest
was held on April 21. The event was planned
to celebrate the month of science(April) and
encourage students to love science. There
were 2 hosts for this, teacher Gang Jaeseok
in charge of Earth science and teacher Sohn
Myunghee of chemistry. Some volunteers
from the 1st grade helped them
proceed. Before the main event,
students sang songs together
relaxing themselves. There were 30
questions for the preliminary, in
which a class with the most
survivors could get some scores. It
was really good to see the students
following the rules. After the prelim, there
remained only 15 survivors. Meanwhile,
there was an intermission and it was a dance
performance by a school club 'Dance Spirit.'
And then, the semifinal and the revival
match were held. Everyone couldn't sit back
and relax till the end of the game. There was
no single winner; every one of them won. It
seemed a team became one and all the group
members cooperated. That I think is the most
precious prize ever.

with me. And there were some students who prepared my birthday
cake and sang‘happy birthday’to me. I was so impressed that I could
even shed tears. Thanks to all.

What was the most special memory in Wonhwa?

This is an interview with the Japanese native teacher, Okamoto
Yukitsugu, who left us after 3 years of devotion in our school.
I can’ t forget the time when I and my colleagues danced to the
song‘Gee(by Girls’Generation).’I can’ t forget the joy we shared
at the school auditorium, Dongahm Hall. Can you remember the
hairstyle teacher James got on that day? He was so cute. Anyway I can’
t forget those several cultural exchange programs I took part in. You
know, Wonhwa is really famous for its sisterhood with foreign schools.

What is the most impressive thing in Korea?

I went to Pohang to see the grand fireworks shot off from the
Pohang harbor. I took part in the Chuncheon Marathon. And I
visited Ahndong Hahoe Traditional Village. I can’
t forget all of them.

U Gold Coast and visited Blue Mountain which is called a mini Grand
29th July, 2010, I and my family went to Australia for summer
vacation. We boarded a plane at the Incheon airport and arrived at
the Sydney airport. Then we took a domestic airline to go to
Brisbane. The city is known for its famous resorts. There even was a
brand-new amusement park that was built on the sea. In the
aquarium, I could enjoy dolphin shows and there were a number of
sea creatures inside. Meanwhile, I saw Australian husbands moving
their baby carriages. I just dreamt of my future husband moving my
baby carriage for me. On July 31, we went to the biggest beach
called Surfers-paradise. The total length of the seashore is 42km and
it has fantastic landscape. I even could see a lot of beautiful yachts. I
heard that some Australians use them for commuting to work. In the
afternoon, I visited a tropical fruit farm. All of the bananas were
Canyon. The place was located on 1km above the sea level and it
blew really hard. I rode a special train that moved vertically and
enjoyed the scenery. After that, we went to the famous Opera House.
On seeing it, I could not help but make a sigh of exclamation. And
Harbor Bridge itself was great, too. People were busy taking photos
and I was one of them. August 2, I could fully enjoy the night views
of Sydney because all of the buildings were illuminated till 3am
supported by government. I heard it's because Australia itself is a
tourism attraction. During my trip of six days, I was totally soaked in
the beauty of Australia. I could see lots of exotic places and things
and I could feel and breathe the same air together. Sometimes I
envied their culture and situation especially of the education system.
Australian education usually focuses on cooperation rather than
competition. But, because of that, I could have my dream of
upgrading Korea. So my trip to Australia was worth much.

Mongolia!
“Sehn Behno!” means hello in
Mongolian. The first day, Aug 16, a party
left Incheon airport. It consisted of the
students from middle and high schools
with their principals and two officers from
the Daegu Education Bureau, along with a
staff from World Vision. After 3 hours of
flight, we could land on Genghis Khan
airport. On the second day, a staff from
World Vision Mongolia greeted and
guided us to Blue Sky, a shelter for
orphans. I was quite touched by the tears
she showed us when explaining the
situation. When I saw the kids
smile at me, tears just ran down
my cheeks. I felt I understood
a little bit of
the manager’s
mind. After a
performance
by the kids,
we gave them presents. Then we moved to a
school. Students there gave us horse milk to
greet us. We made small groups with
Mongolian students and the group I
belonged to was named ‘Kongolia,’ which
meant Korea and Mongolia. We made a
kind of poster, on which we wrote names
of the students and drew the national flags,
with a depiction of students shaking
hands. After that, we introduced our
cultures to each other. My team let others
know about Korean traditional music. I
prepared a performance of danso, one of
the Korean traditional musical
instruments, but I didn’t play it well.
Anyway I went to a ‘ger,’ which is a
Mongolian traditional house. At night, I
could see lots of stars ─ shooting stars,
constellations such as the great bear, and a
milky way! I was totally overwhelmed by
them. And the most impressive thing
was... I could see them without a telescope!
Taking a shower of the stars, I even felt
like crying. I just didn’t know why. On the
third day, we visited a rehabilitation center
for the disabled, and a theater where we
could see Mongolian students play a
musical instrument which looked like a
horse head. Then we went to another ger,
in which we were served with goat meat
for lunch. Unfortunately it was so oily that
I missed kimchi a lot. Nevertheless, the
taste was wonderful. The fourth day, we
went to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. The
place was a paradise for wild animals. The
scene where horses drank water by the lake
and ate green grass was a masterpiece
painting to me. Though I’m back in here,
in Daegu now, I can’t forget all those
things I experienced in Mongolia.
