to trail dirty brushes through the house
– something I had to do in the old house.
We wanted to be able to have open days
and exhibitions to promote my artwork
and this has proved to be the ideal
space. We recently held our first open

We love the downstairs shelving,

obscure the night view of the city. Most
of the blinds are simply decorative as the
windows looked really bare without them.
The most important thing was to have
a light, spacious studio and office, a
comfortable living room and a space to
display work and entertain. There is a
covered outside space just off the
kitchen and we practically live in it in
summer as it overlooks the front garden
and is private and airy. It’s great for a
glass of wine after a long day and as
a quiet place to sit and read.

What have you changed?

We opened up the kitchen as it originally
had a central breakfast bar plus dividing
panelling which, in theory, delineated the
dining area. In reality it just made a large
interesting space feel gloomy and
oppressive. We took all of this out and
started with a large unusual room with
a big window between the kitchen and

How would you describe

your decorating style?
Contemporary, colourful, eclectic and fun.
It is tempting to fill this house with
mid-century design classics but we really
didn’t want an all-encompassing look. It
was more about finding places for the
things we’ve collected over the years. I
think the house reflects our love of travel
hence the travel posters, which we found
in a Chicago gallery.
I love colour, so I’ve used it everywhere
except in my studio, where I needed a
neutral background. The white walls and
floor act as a blank canvas for my art. GH

Beautiful baths
Make the most of your bathroom, whether it’s a good-sized family
room or a small en suite, with our comprehensive bathroom guide

B
athroom design
is getting more
adventurous, and as
the island concept is proving
hugely popular for kitchens,
the centrepiece bath concept
is a favourite idea for
bathrooms. There’s a huge
choice of ‘focal point’ baths
available, to the extent that
a regular rectangular two-
panelled bath that sits in the
corner of the bathroom is
considered to be rather dull
these days! A free-standing
bath looks best in a large
room, but there are other
options if your bathroom has
a less-than-generous amount
of floor space.

Trends
Look out for curved shapes,
which give a softer look to
the room. The latest showers
involve sleek, minimalist
enclosures and flush-fitting
trays. Walk-in showers are
very desirable and are a good
choice for a family bathroom.

Why go…
If you’re looking for

place for you. This
beautifully restored
coaching inn, situated
in picturesque
Northleach, combines
the charm of a local
pub with the luxuries
you’d expect at a

Things to do…
You’re in the heart
of the Cotswolds, so
perfectly placed for
exploring the pretty
villages, historic sites
and countryside
activities that this
area is renowned for.

What we loved…
The Wheatsheaf is a joy to stay in, not only for the friendly ambience and
seriously tasty food, but also for the perfectly pitched decor. Owners
Georgie and Sam Pearman have created the perfect country retreat,
combining home comforts with a real sense of style. The place is full of
quirky treasures, from the wonderful mix of original artworks to the antique
furniture and beautiful wallpapers. We loved the thoughtful touches too, like
the snacks in the bedrooms and the row of Hunter wellies for guests to
borrow. The wonderfully appointed bathrooms are utterly indulgent with
deep roll-top baths and high-pressure showers by CP Hart and toiletries
by Compagnie de Provence. A special mention must also go to the beds
by Hypnos, which were the most comfortable beds we’ve ever tried!

QA & I’m knocking down

my kitchen/living
room into an open
plan area. Can you
give me some advice about what
I should do with the lighting?
You’ll need to talk to an electrician
to plan different circuits, so you can
switch lights on, off and dim them
as you use the various areas. Take
a look at Taptile, a lighting control
system that’s ideal for kitchens. It’s
a panel that can go behind your
tiles and has touch-sensitive spots
that you use to operate the main,
task and accent lighting from the
kitchen for your open plan area.

I’m confused about light bulbs. Help!
& Traditional light bulbs have been disappearing
from shops and are being replaced by energy-
efficient bulbs. First bulbs rated 100W were
phased out and lower-rated bulbs followed.
From September 2012, all traditional, clear incandescent
bulbs will be phased out, too. You don’t have to replace all
the bulbs in your home immediately – but inefficient bulbs
won’t be made or imported in the future. New table lamps

everyone at the table, and it’s useful to fit a dimmer switch,
too, so you can adjust the level of lighting to create the right
atmosphere. A rise-and-fall pendant – that can be pulled

» INSIDE STORY: THE SHOP AT NUMBER 57

Creative thinking
Marie Nichols and Simon Ward realised their
dream after setting up an online interiors shop

Q
When did you start your
business?
My husband Simon and I
started to plan the business, design
products and source stock in 2010
while spending a year in Sydney but
it had been something we had talked
about doing for years.

Q
Why did you start it?
It was a dream that we both
shared. After moving to
Sydney, I continued working as a
freelance interiors stylist, while Simon
worked on a few freelance design
commissions, but eventually we found
the time to concentrate on designing
products and our website, and we
turned the brand into a reality.
