a) Soil
pH values in soil show alkaline nature of the ground. Sulphate contents in soil show that site
falls under Class I as per IS 456: 2000. However the site is assigned “Severe” environmental
exposure condition in view of coastal environment. The minimum cement content shall be
320kg/m3 or as per tender specification whichever is more, with maximum free w/c ratio 0.45
and minimum grade of concrete of M30.
b) Ground Water
In ground water contents are more than permissible limit as per IS 456:2000, so it is not
suitable for construction purpose.

Type of shear failure considered Interpolate
Interpolated shear failure was considered for safe bearing capacity computation. The net safe
bearing capacity (SBC) and net safe bearing pressure (SBP) for various sizes of individual rigid
footings under vertical static load intensity is evaluated as in Table 4 for shallow/open
foundation and raft foundations.
Table 4: Summary of SBC & SBP for shallow/Open foundation
The minimum value in between SBC and SBP given in Table 4 shall be adopted for design
for corresponding settlement.
Top clayey strata available at site show expansive characteristics, open foundation may be
placed minimum below 3.5m depth from FGL
8.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
1. The two boreholes comprises of various locations. The sub soil strata consist of top silty
clay (CI-CH) of medium to high plasticity and of medium stiff to very stiff consistency and
hard at greater depth.
2. For minor / lightly loaded structures not sensitive to settlements having width of foundation
up to 1.0m, the foundation shall be placed at 750mm depth from NGL with net safe bearing
capacity not exceeding 5t/m2. A CNS type of cushion of 750mm thickness shall be provided
below lightly loaded structure foundations, laid in layers of 150mm thickness & compacted
to 95% of MDD with suitable compaction methodology.
3. The net safe bearing capacity and safe bearing pressure considering laboratory shear and
settlement parameters for shallow foundation is as given in Table – 4. The value of net SBC
shall be for static vertical loading only. Minimum depth of foundation recommended is below
no moisture variation zone, which may be assumed as 3.0m below natural ground level.
The value of net SBC shall be for static vertical loading only.
4. In case isolated foundation or raft foundations is not feasible to adopt for minor/ lightly
loaded structures, then Under-reamed pile foundation may be considered alternative. The
load carrying capacity of under reamed pile is given in Table 5. The load capacity of piles is
subjected to pile load test verification as per IS 2911-Part 4.
5. The safe load of shallow and pile foundation can be increased by 25% maximum for
transient loading arising out of wind loading and moment arising out of earthquake effects.
6. The top black/yellow sub soil is expansive nature and is not suitable for filling purpose.
7. The backfill soil shall be non-expansive and it shall be done in layers of 150 mm thickness
and each layer shall be well compacted with suitable compactors at 95% MDD of proctor
test to ensure proper & effective embedment of foundations.
8. Water table has been observed at 0.6m depth below existing ground level, during the sub
soil exploration work carried out in the month of October 2018. For design purpose effect of
water level is considered at ground level.
a. pH values in soil show alkaline nature of the ground. Sulphate contents in soil
show that site falls under Class I as per IS 456: 2000.
b. Ground water contents are more than permissible limits and it is not suitable for
construction purpose.
10. The lab.CBR value is in the range of 2.20 to 2.40 % in soaked condition.
11. The stability of the vertical cut for shallow foundation excavation shall be done at
0.2(H):1(V) However as the soil varies from place to place excavation slope may be flatter if
required.
12. As per IS: 1893, the site falls in the seismic zone III of India. In general liquefaction takes
place in loose saturated sandy strata. At this site the sub strata are silty clay in nature
having very stiff to hard consistency and high cohesion. The GWT is also deep and hence
chance of liquefaction at this site is very low.
13. In case the actual sub-soil conditions during excavation for various foundations are found
different from what has been reported above, consult us for further clarification
