22 ETIQUETTE (ĀDĀB)
OF ZIKR (GOD'S
REMEMBRANCE)
QASIDAH AL-
MUNFARIJAH (THE
POEM OF RELIEF)
► May (3)
► April (3)
► March (8)
Among them are five which precede the utterance of the remembrance:
(4) Seeking the spiritual assistance (from the spiritual will [himma] of the
Shaykh):
Seeking the spiritual assistance, from the spiritual will [himma] of the
Shaykh, in the heart - when initiating and all the while during it. That is
because he is the escort, and the best of escorts in the journey to Allah. And
this is one of the most important etiquettes. Even if he calls upon his Shaykh
for help with his tongue when he has a need, it is permissible.
Among them are twelve while performing remembrance [fī ḥāl adh-Dhikr]:
(1) Sitting in a pure place with one's legs folded, or like the sitting in prayer -
he latter being preferred. Facing the Qiblah if he is alone, in a circle if not-
with them alternating stances, the one who begins sitting like the sitting in
prayer and the last with his legs folded.
(5) That the place be dark. Even if there is a lamp in it, it should be put out,
even if its the only one and being used. This is on the condition that one can.
(6) Closing ones eyes, since this assists in illuminating the heart. For by that,
one cut off the avenues of the physical senses. And by their being cut off, it
opens for him the spiritual senses.
(7) Keeping the image of his Shaykh before his eyes, in whatever way he can.
And that is the most confirmed of etiquettes.
(9) Pure devotion. That is that the action should be purified from every
blemish. So one should not seek the world, nor the hereafter, reward, nor
high status. One should only remember Allah out of love for Allah.
(11) That the meaning of the remembrance be present in the heart with every
utterance. And that one listen, during the remembrance, to his heart,
keeping the meaning present, until it is as if one's heart is the rememberer
and he is the one listening.
(12) Expelling everything from the heart other than Allah, the Exalted, by
"Lā ilāha illā Allah," enabling "Lā ilāha illā Allah" to impact the heart and
flow to the limbs.
And among them are five after finishing the remembrance:
(1) Silence and sitting still, keeping the remembrance present by keeping up
with it in his heart, taking advantage of what proceeds from the
remembrance. For maybe it will furnish him with a profit in the blinking of
an eye and he will be provided in a moment what thirty years of struggle
would not have provided him with. And this profit could be abstinence, piety,
bearing patiently with injury, unveiling, love or more than that. Then, if one
is quite and still, the profits will encompass all of his affairs. So it is
incumbent upon him to wait as much as is possible. If not, he should leave.
(3) That he gather all of his senses so that not even a hair on him should
move, like the state of the cat when it hunts a mouse.
(4) That he restrain himself repeatedly until the benefits encompass all of his
affairs. That is because that is the easiest way to illuminate his insight,
remove the veils, and to cut off the insinuations of the nafs and Shaytan-
since when he restrains himself and hinders his senses, he becomes like the
dead person. And Shaytan does not seek out the dead person.
(5) Never drinking water following the remembrance, nor during it. That is
because remembrance is a fire which brings lights, manifestations, profits,
and the longing on account of the instigation of the One remembered. And
drinking water puts out every fire. At the very least he should be patient for
half an hour. And whoever can wait longer is better, to the point that the
sincere one almost does not drink, except under extreme circumstances.

SUFI SUPPLICATIONS
After Abul Fadl completed his travels in the pursuit of knowledge he returned to his
hometown of Tawzar, but had to leave it due to the oppression of the ruler of that
place. He therefore lived in different cities of Algeria and Morrocco teaching grammar,
jurisprudence, principles of law, tenents of faith whilst at the same time traversing the
path of self purification and abstinence.
His students included Qadi Musa bin Hammad al-Sanhaji, Abu Muhammad Abdullah
bin Suleiman al-Taharti and Ibn al-Ramamah the Mufti of Fes.
He was known for his piety and became well known for his mastery of jurisprudence.
Along with this efficacy of his supplications-(dua) was attested to such that it was said
by some: I seek refuge in Allah from the supplication of Ibn al-Nahwi!
MORE ABOUT SIDI ABUL FADL IBN NAHWI: THE STORY OF QASIDAH AL-
MUNFARIJAH
After his leaving his hometown of Tawzar he headed towards Algeria and stayed in the
Masjid of Bani Hammad in Masaylah.
A man there complained to him of his suffering from his having to flee from the
oppressor of his home place and requested him to raise the issue with the oppressor so
that he may permit him to return.
The ruler saw a dream which troubled him and resulted him in halting his acts of
oppression whilst admitting to his sins. He instructed that this man’s wealth be
returned because he saw in his dream the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him
peace) who said: Send to Abul Fadl bin al-Nahwi in the masjid known as such in
Algeria, and carry out what he orders. The Khalifah did this and sent someone in
search of him.
When he entered and found him he said: What is your need O Abul Fadl? He
informed him of his order and wrote for him to return of all that he had been
informed about.
Then he was asked: What is your means with the Messenger of Allah? He then
informed him of his poem.
ABOUT SUFI MASTER SIDI IBN AL-NAHWI: FAMOUS FOR QASIDAH AL-
MUNFARIJAH
THE POEM OF RELIEF -RECITED AGAINST OPPRESSORS
SIDI ABUL FADL IBN NAHWI (D. 513/1098)
The great Sufi Shaykh Sidi Ibn Nahwi keep good company with young Sidi Ali ibn
Harzihim-(Ghazalian in tariqah) Later Sidi Ali ibn Harzihim become the Sufi master
of Sidi Abu Madyan Ghawth-(Sidi Abu Maydan was the Sufi master of the Great Qutb
Sidi Ibn Mashish, Sidi Ibn Mashish was the Sufi master of the greatest Qutb Imam
Shadhili).
The grandson of Sidi Ali ibn Harzihim, The Sufi master Sidi Mohammed ibn
Harazem, was the Sufi master that educated the young Imam Shadhili and started his
journey sufi to seek the 'Spiritual Pole of the Time-'Qutb az-Zaman' who was Imam
Shadhili's Master, the Great Al-Qutb Sidi Ibn Mashish.
Qasidah Munfarijah- is sung along side the other Famous Dua 'The Prayer of the
Oppressed'-al-Du’a al-Nasiri by Sidi Ibn Nasir.
Afdala al-ibadati Intidharul-faraji-“The most superior worship is anticipating relief.”-
Hadith. To wait-Intidhar an for an opening from Allah is worship. Since we are
waiting an opening of Mercy-rahma, then it is considered worship-ibadat. So wait for
an opening by keeping to worship.
The only way to save ourselves from the terrible troubles expected to appear soon and
which are now happening and before the advent of al-Mahdi (as), is to spend our time
in worship. Thus the importance of Qasidah Munfarijah- 'The Poem of Relief' the
poem that asked for Help againest Problems and against Oppressors.
“The first of those who are called to Paradise are the ‘praisers’ those who praise Allah
in ease and hardship.”-Hadith. And that is what Qasidah Munfarijah- 'The Poem of
Relief' is it 'Prasies Allah in in ease and hardship'.
A common saying in the twelfth-century Fez was: "I seek refuge in God from the curse
of Ibn Nahwi!" to illustrate the truth of this saying, at-Tadili reports that when Ibn
Nahwi lived in Sijilmasa he stayed at a certain mosque, where he taught usul al-fiqh.
One day an official notary ('adil) passed by the door to the mosque and asked, "What
is the discipline that this person is teaching?" When told that Ibn Nahwi was
conducting lessons on the scripturally passed sources of jurisprudence, the notary,
who followed only the early unreformed-Maliki tradition, replied derisively, "How is
this one allowed to teach us subjects we do not know of?" and ordered the Shaykh to
be thrown out of the mosque. Before leaving, Ibn Nahwi rose to his feet and said to his
tormentor, "You killed knowledge. Now God will kill you in this very place!" The next
day, when the man went to the mosque in order to notarise a marriage contract, he
was killed by a tribesman whose clan was feuding with his own.
