Mini Lesson 3: Paragraph Structure

(Language Arts) Grade Level 4

I. Content and Standards:

a. Focus on Paragraph Structure CC.1.4.4.D Group related information
in paragraphs and sections, linking ideas within categories of
information using words and phrases; provide a concluding
statement or section; include formatting when useful to aiding
comprehension.

II. Instructional Objective:

a. Be able to identify parts of a paragraph.
b. Use a graphic organizer to construct a paragraph.

III. Instructional Procedures:

a. To introduce this mini-lesson, I will show the student this video
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhOJZwLG8C4). This video
introduces the parts of a paragraph, topic sentence, detail sentences, and
concluding sentence. This will be a review for the student.
b. For the lesson itself, I will read a paragraph to the student. Together,
we will label the different parts of a paragraph. We will then talk about
what each sentence does to help the purpose of the paragraph. The
student will then be given a paragraph that has been cut into different
parts. The student will be asked to put the sentences in order to correctly
construct a paragraph. I will then check the students work and ask for an
explanation.
c. To conclude the mini lesson, I will give the student a hamburger
graphic organizer. I will ask the student to fill out each part of the graphic
organizer and then write the final paragraph. The subject of the paragraph
will be “What is your favorite subject in school and why?”.

a. Powerpoint/Projector or iPad
b. Paragraph (Cut up)
c. Hamburger Graphic Organizer
d. Paper and Pencil

V. Assessment/Evaluation:
a. I will evaluate the student’s ability to construct the paragraph made
at the end of the lesson.
VI. Differentiation:
a. This is not a group activity, but if the activity is too hard for the
student, extra support from the teacher can be provided.
VII. Technology:
a. A short PowerPoint to use as a visual.
VIII. Self-Assessment
a. I will look to see that the student can construct a paragraph on their
own. If the student can do this, the objective has been met.
