ABSTRACT
Based on the airport pavement operational safety, this article discusses the
development of a new technology for evaluating the anti-cracking performance of
airport concrete runways under construction. This dumbbell test technology can help
evaluate the effects of different factors on the anti-cracking performance of airport
concrete runways with the new device of stress risers. This method can rapidly
evaluate the anti-cracking performance of runways with different concrete materials
at the construction site. This new test technology can provide solutions to choosing
the most suitable materials and concrete mix ratios for the improvement of
anti-cracking performance of airport concrete runways under construction. The paper
also conducted a comparative study with another two test methods of concrete
anti-cracking performance (ring method and slab test method) under constraint
conditions.

runway materials are the most important factor. When considering the airport
construction condition, concrete materials with highest anti-cracking performance
will be the best materials for airport runways, while meeting the requirements of the
strength and durability.
The cracking performances of concrete testing under constraint conditions
more closely resemble the condition of concrete at the construction site. Until now,
there are not any standard methods of testing the cracking performance of airport
pavement materials under constraint condition in National standards of China. All
methods around worldwide are in the trial stages and there is not a consensus.
Therefore, we need a test method that can evaluate the anti-cracking performance of
concrete quickly and accurately when considering in the airport construction
condition.
The methods of testing the cracking performance of concrete under constraint
conditions mainly include the Slab Method, the Ring Method, and the Prism Method.
Although these three methods could solve certain problems, they also have major
drawbacks. The Slab Method, introduced by Kraai in 1985, could not precisely
evaluate the crack of concrete due to the irregularity of cracking, and its data
processing afterwards has drawbacks. Roy Carlson introduced the Ring Method
from MIT in 1942 and the problem of the Ring Method is the long time that takes for
testing and its lack of sensitivity. The Prism Method was invented by
Springenschmid from Germany in 60s of 20c, which can test the trend of concrete
cracking, however it is inconvenient to test at job sites, expensive, and its
instruments require high sensitivity.
In order to overcome limitations mentioned above, this research developed a
new method to evaluate the cracking performance of concrete under constraint
conditions. Its exercise of stress risers could lead concrete to crack quickly,
providing a quick method for evaluating the crack performance of concrete materials
and for performing simulated tests at the job site conveniently.
This paper proposes a new test technology, the Dumbbell method, for
evaluating the anti-cracking performance of concrete under constraint conditions
(Figure 1), based on which, Dumbbell device with stress riser for concrete crack test
is invented. From the principles of view, the device is equipped with an advanced
Stress cracks generator system, which can induce cracking. In addition, the ends of

the device can provide the constraint, which cracks the concrete. This method has
proven to be more effective for rapid cracking, during experimental tests and for
comparison of different methods in the same condition. The structure of the
instrument is shown in the following sketch.

Figure 1. Dumbbell Device with Stress Riser for Concrete Crack Test
On both sides of the central device are stress risers for which the angle can be
adjusted. After concrete is poured into the mold, stress concentration is generated
under induction of the stress risers. The ends of the mold can provide the constraint.
The stress, due to restrained volume change related to deformation and shrinkage of
concrete, is the main driving force for the deleterious cracking. When concrete
shrinkage stress is greater than resistance, the specimen will crack.
The test mold of the device is made of steel, which includes both sides of the
fixed-end and adjustable stress generator in the middle. Adjustable angle of stress
generator can be adjusted freely within a certain range. The narrow angle will make
concrete materials lose specimen representation. Too large of a testing angle will
affect the sensitivity of the test specimen. Therefore, the adjustable stress generator
will get the most suitable angle for concrete cracking. After the determination of the
best angle of stress generator, all parts of the instrument should be fixed and then the
cracking test can be carried out. This method is suitable for the evaluation of the
early age concrete cracking performance with the following advantages: stronger
sensitivity, more accurate, and easy to use at the construction site.

METHOD
There are two Evaluation indices for the dumbbell method. One is ICT
(Initial crack time), the other is ACW (average crack width within 24 hours).

The mold of the Ring method includes an inner steel ring, an outer ring, and
the base (shown in Figure 3). Because the stiffness of steel ring is large, the ring can
provide the restriction for concrete specimen when the concrete shrinks. Cracking
will happen from the interface of the specimen under the tensile stress caused by the

constraint of the ring. The evaluation Index of slab method is the initial time to
cracking and the average crack width.

following advantages: stronger sensitivity, and more accuracy, but also easy to use at
the construction site. The evaluation Index of dumbbell method are ICT (Initial crack

Figure 5. Maximum Crack Width of Concrete With The Method (Dumbbell、
Slab Ring)
From the test results (shown in Table 2), for concrete with a dosage of 1.5kg/
m3, the dumbbell method was superior to the slab and ring methods (Figure 5). The
initial time of the ring method was much greater than the former two kinds of
methods. The maximum crack width was 1.07mm using the dumbbell method,
which was much larger than the other methods. The concrete with dosages of
0.9kg/m3 and 1.2kg/m3 also showed the same trend. The concrete crack performance
reflected larger maximum cracking widths, making crack measurements easier
reducing measurement errors.
For the same test materials, among the three methods, the dumbbell method
was the fastest method to reflect concrete cracking performance. The dumbbell
method resulted in the maximum crack widths. The dumbbell test method is superior
to slab and ring method for evaluating the concrete crack performance, in terms of
sensitivity.
From the view of test cycle, it needs 24 hours to finish the test by the
dumbbell method and slab method; Because of reduced sensitivity, the ring method
needs a longer time to finish the test when initial cracking occurs. The ring method

takes 4 days to complete. Therefore, the dumbbell and slab methods are superior to
the ring method in terms of time to completion.

As for the job site application, the dumbbell and slab methods are able to
reflect the concrete crack performance in a relatively short time because of their
strong sensitivity. This is the most important feature for construction site
applications. Therefore, the lateral comparative test can be used conveniently within
the job site. The Ring Test method is rarely used, due to its long testing cycle, which
cannot meet the requirements of the construction site. An overall comparison of the
three test methods are shown in Table 3.

period before operation, it provides an effective test method to improve the anti
crack performance of airport pavement and guarantee operational safety.
CONCLUSIONS
2. The Dumbbell method is suitable for the construction jobsite. It can find
the optimal concrete proportion with best anti cracking performance, meets the
requirements of the strength and durability, and is an application where airport
pavement materials could improve the anti crack performance of airport pavements
