In my paper I will be arguing that medical marijuana (specifically CBD oil) should be

legalized in the United States.

Axe, Dr. Josh. YouTube, YouTube, 15 May 2018,

www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSiSUQYEXGw

This source is a video I found on YouTube by Dr. Josh Axe. This video talks about the

benefits of CBD and medical marijuana. It compares the effects of using a natural substance such

as CBD oil to using manmade chemicals for a couple types of illnesses. One example would be

the use of medical marijuana to help treat cancer instead of chemotherapy. He talked about how

his mother had cancer and she would get extremely ill while on chemo but when she used natural

methods including medical marijuana she got better, and it didn’t have as many negative side

effects.

I think the purpose of this video was to compare medical marijuana to unnatural forms of

medicine. I believe the source is credible because he has real experiences in this field and he is a

doctor that works with natural medicines. This video will be useful in my paper for comparing

the negative side effects of other medicines to medical marijuana.

Bradford, Ashley C. “Factors Driving the Diffusion of Medical Marijuana Legalization in the

United States.” Taylor & Francis Ltd, vol. 24, no. 1, Feb. 2017, pp. 75–84. Ebscohost,

www.tandfonline.com.sinclair.ohionet.org/.

This source is an academic journal I found using the Sinclair library database. It was

written by Ashley C. Bradford. The reason I chose this source is because it debunked a lot of the
previous stigmas around medical marijuana. The journal states some of the assumptions people

have made about medical marijuana such as it will lead to addiction, cause criminal activity, lead

to the usage of harder drugs, and that there isn’t enough medical value. The journal points out

that the use of marijuana has never been proven to lead to harder drugs or criminal activity. It

even goes on to state that the use of harder drugs was lowered in a study in 2012 when medical

marijuana laws were removed.

Even though I will be focusing on CBD oil in my paper I still think addressing medical

marijuana is important. This article will be useful for defending medical marijuana in my paper. I

believe the author’s purpose was to disprove inaccurate statements about medical marijuana. I

believe this source is credible because it has been reviewed multiple times and I found it in the

Sinclair database.

Brzozowska, Karolina. “CBD Oil: Health Benefits and Risks.” News Medical Life Sciences, 19

Dec. 2018, www.news-medical.net/health/CBD-Oil-Health-Benefits-and-Risks.aspx.

This source was written by Karolina Brzozowska and it’s posted on the News Medical

Life Sciences website. This article explains the benefits and risks to the usage of CBD oil. CBD

oil has been shown to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antipsychotic,

analgesic, and muscle relaxing effects. Although CBD oil doesn’t have the intoxicating effects of

THC there are still some possible side effects. These possible side effects include sleepiness,

fatigue, malaise, weakness, diarrhea, decreased appetite, and sleeping problems. But the chances

of these side effects occurring only due to CBD oil usage are very slim.
I believe the writer’s purpose was to educate people interested in CBD oil. The article

includes the benefits and risks, so it isn’t biased. The article was also reviewed by Jennifer

Logan, MD, MPH and the author lists all of her sources at the end of the article so I believe the

source is credible. This source is very relevant to my research proposal because I’m arguing

marijuana should be legalized for medicinal purposes.

Farley, Kimberly. “CBD Oil for Anxiety and Pain Management.” CINAHL Complete, 9 Mar.

2019, eds-b-ebscohost-com.sinclair.ohionet.org/eds/detail/detail.

This source is an article written by Kimberly Farley. I found it in the Sinclair library

database. I like this article because it explains how the CBD compounds bind to the

endocannabinoid system to establish and maintain human health. The article also gives examples

of symptoms CBD can help with such as visceral pain and digestive conditions. This includes

Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Cannabis is replacing opioids for pain relief. The

main reason I chose this source is because it uses specific case studies to back up the information

in the article. She also includes that CBD can be used to treat anxiety related disorders. This

includes social anxiety disorder, general anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-

traumatic stress disorder, and panic disorder.

I believe the writer’s purpose was to educate people on how CBD oil can help improve

the lives of people with chronic pain and anxiety. I believe this source is credible because it was

reviewed multiple times. She also lists all her references at the bottom. I believe this article is

relevant to my article because it focuses on the benefits of CBD oil.

Johnson, Jon. “CBD Oil: Uses, Health Benefits, and Risks.” Medical News Today, MediLexicon
International, 27 July 2018, www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/317221.php.

This source is an article was written by Jon Johnson and is posted on the Medical News

Today website. The source gives some examples of how CBD can be used to help people quit

smoking or even lessen withdrawal symptoms. The article also talks about how CBD can help

with acne, diabetes, epilepsy, cancer, and anxiety. The article also warns readers that there may

be side effects such as tiredness or weight change and that there has not been any research on the

effects of CBD oil on children.

I think the purpose of this source was to educate. I believe this source is Credible because

it was reviewed by Debra Rose Wilson, PhD, MSN, RN, IBCLC, AHN-BC, CHT. This article

will be useful in my paper because it has even more benefits of CBD but also includes the side

effects.

Law, Tara. “Is CBD Oil Legal or Healthy? Here's What to Know.” Time, Time, 12 Mar. 2019,

time.com/5516745/cbd-oil-legal-healthy/.

This source was written by Tara Law from Time magazine. She spoke to Dr. Esther

Blessing, an associate professor of psychiatry at New York University, and Margaret Haney,

professor of neurobiology at Columbia University Medical Center and director of the

university’s Marijuana Research Laboratory. The article advises people to be careful when

purchasing and using CBD oil because it isn’t regulated by the government so there could be

other chemicals added. The article also points out the fact that there could be long term unknown

side effects.
I believe this article’s purpose was to educate people on the dangers of CBD oil. I believe

the source is credible because the two doctors seem very qualified. I’m going to use this source

in my article to point out if they legalized CBD oil then there wouldn’t be the risk of other

chemicals being added. Also, that even though we’re not sure of the long-term side effects, most

manmade drugs have a lot of side effects and are usually harsh on the body.

Mathew, Stan. “CBD Oil for Pain Management.” Stan Mathew, MD American Rehabilitation

Medicine, 5 May 2018, www.stanmathewmd.com/cbd-oil-for-pain-management/.

This source was written by Stan Mathew, MD and it’s posted on stanmathewmd.com.

This article also lists the benefits and some possible side effects of CBD oil. However, the main

reason I chose this source is because it includes a couple different diseases CBD oil helps treat.

Pain management is the most common use of CBD oil. It is given to patients with chronic pain

such as arthritis. This article also explains how CBD oil helps with pain management which I

believe is crucial for my research paper. Mathew explains how CBD produces anti-inflammatory

and pain killing effects by interacting with the immune system. The article also includes that

there is a possibility CBD oil helps with the muscle spasms associated with Multiple Sclerosis.

I believe the writer’s purpose is to educate people interested in CBD oil. The article

explains what CBD oil is and what it can be used for, as well as the possible risks. I believe the

source is credible because his website lists his credentials and his teams’ credentials. They all

have medical degrees and seem to know what they’re talking about. I believe this source is

relevant to my topic since it’s about using CBD oil for medical purposes.
