1 Capture, mark, release and recapture technique is used to estimate the population size
of mobile organisms. It involves capturing the organisms, marking them in a suitable way
that does not cause damage and then returning them to their natural habitat.
Teknik tangkap, tanda, lepas dan tangkap semula digunakan untuk menganggarkan saiz
populasi organisma yang sering bergerak. Kaedah ini melibatkan penangkapan
organisma dengan cara yang sesuai, penandaan organisma dengan cara yang sesuai
agar tidak berlaku kecederaan dan kemudiannya pelepasan organisma ke habitat
semula jadinya.
A group of students are asked by their Biology teacher to use the above technique to
investigate the population size of frog in different locations.
Diagram 1.1 shows three different locations where this experiment was carried out.
Sekumpulan pelajar telah diminta oleh guru Biologi mereka untuk menggunakan
technique di atas untuk menyiasat saiz populasi katak di lokasi-lokasi yang berbeza.

Step 1 : Three study locations are identified and marked using sign boards
and sticks.
Langkah 1 : Tiga kawasan kajian dikenalpasti dan ditandakan dengan menggunakan

Step 2 : The first sample of frogs are captured randomly from each location and
the number of frogs captured are recorded.

Step 4 : The tagged frogs are then released into the same location where they
were caught.

Step 5 : After 5 days, the second sample is recaptured at random from each
location.

sample are recorded.

2 A farmer has a piece of land which he uses for planting rambutan trees. In order to make
the land more fertile so that the trees will grow well and fast, the farmer uses a large
amount of fertiliser. Later, he discovers that all the young rambutan plants wilt due to
shortage of water. To overcome the problem the farmer determines again the amount of
fertiliser that suits the plants so that the concentration of soil water can maintain the
mass of the rambutan plants.
Seorang petani mempunyai sebidang tanah yang dia gunakan untuk menanam pokok
rambutan. Untuk menjadikan tanah itu lebih subur supaya pokok-pokok rambutan akan
tumbuh dengan sihat dan cepat, petani itu menggunakan jumlah baja yang banyak.
Kemudian dia mendapati bahawa kesemua anak-anak pokok rambutan layu disebabkan
oleh kekurangan air. Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, petani itu menentukan semula
jumlah baja yang sesuai dengan pokok rambutan supaya kepekatan air tanah boleh
mengekalkan jisim pokok rambutan.
