Leadership and

management Case
study #1
Question#1

How can Laura most effectively use both management and leadership skills in
her role as associate director? What combination of the two do you think world
work best in this setting?

Answer

There are any effective ways in which Laura can manage and at the same time can
be a good leader for her non-profit organization agency. She should have a good
idea about her management like who has been hired and who has left the agency.
As a good leader, she should know what responsibilities have to be given to the
individuals, as the CV of every individual describes their experience. Different staff
should be hired for different departments, for example hiring new applicants for
finance department, IT department, social department and research department
etc. Laura should also hire those applicants that are interested in the job and be
very critical while conducting an interview.

Question#2

What steps could be taken to build staff confidence?

Answer
The staff member’s confidence can be increased by motivation. A simple “Thank
you” or giving any compliment can support their confidence. The leader should
make them believe that they are the backbone of the organization and the
organization is noting with them as “Google” does. Confidence can also be built
up with formal and informal conversations, but here also most of the time
informal communication works. The other factors that can help in bringing up
their confidence are intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is the
motivation that individual gets internally, like someone works hard and leader
tells him/her that you did a great job, that individual will be motivated internally
and this will increase their confidence. Extrinsic motivation is rewarding someone
with bonus or increasing their monthly income for their extraordinary work.
When leader rewards his employee, this will boost up their confidence because
now they will think that they have done something out of the box from their
regular work or experience.

Question #3

What advice would you give Laura on improving her leadership skills and to the
managers on improving their management skills?

Answer

Laura should decrease her frequent tour to other places and pay attention to her
non-profit agency. She is also not being able to fully explain her agency future
vision, which decreases the motivation of the staff members while they are
working. Management can do is hire experienced staff, this will help the agency in
decreasing their budget because that one experienced employee will be capable
of doing the work of 4 to 5 employees alone. Control in budget will also decrease
their financial problems.

Question #4

Which leadership style do you think a leader would need to be effective in this
situation?

Answer
Laura should follow democratic leadership style. First of all it will help her know
the basic problems of managers and employee that are not motivating them to be
productive for the agency. This Democratic style also enables the leader to share
his/her thoughts with the staff members and employee will also be able to share
their thoughts also. This will increase there experience and the agency will be
more productive in the future.
