Smart Grid

Introduction:
What is Grid?
Transmission lines, transformers, sub-stations, etc in short anything that delivers
electricity to your house/shops/etc.
What makes a Grid “Smart”?
Digitalizing the grid. How?
By:
 Two-way communication i.e. communication between the utility and the
consumer.
 Sensing along the transmission lines.
 Controls, computers and automation to respond digitally to our quickly
changing electric demand.
What we need to define:
 Standards
 Rules and Regulations
 Education of consumer through Advertisements.
Output:
 More efficient transmission of electricity
 Quicker restoration of electricity after power disturbances
 Reduced operations and management costs for utilities, and ultimately lower
power costs for consumers
 Reduced peak demand, which will also help lower electricity rates
 Increased integration of large-scale renewable energy systems
 Better Integration of customer-owner power generation systems, including
renewable energy systems
 Improved security
In-case of emergences such as storms, attacks, etc. which cause large-scale blackouts
and left thousand or millions stranded and even affects other institutions as well such
as banking, etc. Smart grid will, in such conditions, respond outstandingly quickly and
re-rout the electricity hence preventing large-scale blackouts which at times works’
like dominos (One after another resulting due to the previous one). When there’s
excess energy required the smart grid will result in taking energy for customer-owned
generators of power like Solar etc. In-order to prevent load-shedding and in return the
customer will be given extra units as per policy. This will make difficult situations
easier by taking home-grown Power Generation which are not actually affected by the
natural disasters, whether conditions, etc.
Secondly, it will give consumers a very detailed report and analysis of their energy
usage and hence provide the most efficient way to use energy without effecting their
daily lives. This system will guide them in real-time about their usage and what are
they being charged and an alternative solution to that. This will also help the
consumer reduce their bills by not using the electricity in peak hours and reducing
excessive energy usage. With the help of smart-meters and two-way communication
the consumer will be given Real-time analysis and data. With this advancement we
can by just bringing small changes make a huge difference with these small changes
multiplied by millions and hence save billions of dollars in power consumption. In-
result the consumer will get un-interrupted power at all times and the power
generating company will be able to deliver it with ease.
Our goal is to automate and manage the increasing complexity and needs of
electricity in the 21st Century!

Conventional grid networks are not capable of meeting todays ever increasing
demand. Certain parameters are being compromised such as: Quantity, Quality,
Efficiency, Reliability and Economy. SG benefits consumers, regulators and
stakeholders.
Smart grid uses numerous advanced technologies to deal with issues prevailing with
conventional electric networks.

Smart Grid will have the same potential and will greatly revolutionize the world as the
Internet has done.
