Bahama• Jumbrell a – A World apart

Ultra-sized yet none the less foldable

BAHAMA® fabric structures offer considerably
more than just dependable sheltering from
sun, rain, or just chill weather: Worldwide, they
are unrivalled in their architectural design and
their aesthetic visual appearance.
BAHAMA® fabric structures are renowned
for setting architectural accents in creating
outdoor islands of ease and comfort.
In particular it’s the variety of different-shape
& -size models from the self-reliant
BAHAMA® JUMBRELLA production line
that is considered worldwide as the most
finished and exacting outdoor sheltering
culture by market insiders. What are the
reasons? – The quite simple answer is:

Ever since, BAHAMA® JUMBRELLA

structures have been the most solid, most
elegant, and the most longlived ultra-sized
”anti-wind” parasols that one can buy for
money. They keep being ”Made in Germany”,
now as ever.

from any thing el se in its Field.

A s early as in the sixties of the past century,
BAHAMA® designers gave proof of the justi-
fication of their thesis whereas large dimensi-
ons, modular design, operational functio-nali-
ty, structural stability, and an elegant visual
appearance would not necessarily have to pre-
clude one another .

BAHAMA® JUMBRELLA is still holding
the image of the pioneer structure as well
as being the architectural quality leader
worldwide:

1965: The 1st predecessor generation

1973: The 2nd predecessor generation
1976: 1st preproduction models of the
JUMBRELLA concept
1980: Start line production of the
1st JUMBRELLA generation
1991: Built-in LIGHT option
1994: 2nd JUMBRELLA generation
1997: 3rd JUMBRELLA generation
1999: Built-in IR(C) HEATER option

In the beginning, there wasn’t but the vision
of an ultra-sized yet ready-to-erect foldable
fabric structure that was to become perfect
in every respect. Its aesthetic architecture, its
modular producibility, and its resulting value-
for-the-money price level had been in the lime-
light. Eventually, the evolutionary realization
of that very vision ended up with the variety
of models, sizes, editions, and options offered
from the BAHAMA® JUMBRELLA line
nowadays.

9
With a choice of some 30 different plain
colour shades for the fabric, with the membrane
editions »contemporary« (architectural style)
or »traditional« (with surround valance) to
select from, additionally considering a choice
of 3 basicly different footing systems/devices,
the 12 different-shape & -size basic models of
the JUMBRELLA line sum up to a total of no less
than 2,160 potential ordering & production
versions. If in addition to this the choosable
variety of optional equipment such as
BAHAMA® LIGHT, and/or BAHAMA®
HEATER, and/or BAHAMA® SOUND, and/or
BAHAMA® PRINT is taken into account, the
selection of theoretically choosable, however,
none the less practicable JUMBRELLA unit
variations gets up to some 5,000.

10
11
12
Since mid of the nineties, all JUMBRELLA
structures are being factory-equipped with
the TÜV-certified driveless »BAHAMA®
Servo- Kinematics«, a servo-assisted, mainte-
nance-free, fail-safe (manual) operating system
to unfold & tension the fabric structure. This
operating system is based on the manufac-
turer’s international patents that have been
registered in over 30 European and overseas
countries including e.g. the US, Canada, and
Japan. Nobody once having experienced that
unfolding & refolding mechanism will ever
interest himself in any other system again.

material).

latch in transit yet. To refold the structure reverse the
order of the procedure.
5 Picture showing the structure in its readily
unfolded & tensioned configuration with the latches
properly locked except that the master key [right side]
must be pulled off yet to prevent the parasol from
being handled by unauthorized hands.
6 View of the canopy/membrane ”corner” design:
Each of the radially running sectional seams of the
membrane is caught aligned with its structural arm 3 6
and hence cannot shift laterally. Contrary to this it is
free to shift closely guided (on the upside of the arm)
in longitudinal i.e. radial direction for being preten-
sioned during putting the membrane on.
7 All supports are hinged to the arms indirectly:
The double-shear receiving bearing is formed by the
U-shaped subrail that reinforces the carrying arm
where required.
8 Reinforced circular ventilation opening in
zenith of the fabric membrane. It is widely overlapped
by the vertically spaced solid conical top cover which
prevents rain from penetrating.
9 One of the BAHAMA® Portable Universal 7
(heavy-weight) Foot units, here in its packed on-pallet
shipping condition. In its unpacked off-pallet
condition, the whole unit is liftable & dislocatable by
fork-lift or hydraulic handcart. This Universal Foot
is based on a heavy-duty steel frame cassette [finish is
hot-dip & additionally powder-coating] that is welded
resistant to bending. It is factory-completed by
sculptured (non-standard) decorative concrete slab
inserts, and it has each one firmly built-in heavy-duty
lifting spindle in the four corners of the frame 8
cassette. The lifting spindles allow the erector to level
the foot as a whole and, in one, plumb the telescopic
column of the JUMBRELLA as latter is indispensable
to ensure that the parasol stands absolutely vertical.
Besides, the spindles serve the purpose of lifting the
whole foot up to an underclearance that allows the
forks of a lift or handcart to get underneath for lifting
the foot off its shipping pallet, or for just dislocating
it on the site ground.

blocks the large solid-metal disc so that the foot
cannot be taken to pieces. Furthermore, it prevents
the parasol from being removed from its foot by unau-
thorized hands.

prior to being cast in concrete to the manufacturer’s
foundation drawing coming with. The removable
heavy-duty aluminium ”traffic cover” prevents the
sleeve component from being penetrated by fresh
10 concrete during and/or surface water after com-
pletion of concreting works. The yellow bottom cap
must stay put on as the sleeve component is cast in
flush with finished ground level.
12 Underground receiving sleeve component as in
picture 11, however, with its heavy-wheel load ”traffic
cover” removed only for imminent installation of the
JUMBRELLA. As the black rubber ring gets under
calculated pressure by either the tightened traffic
cover or the pressure ring, it prevents surface water
from penetrating the receiving sleeve. Contrary to the
underground sleeve component which is usually
supplied ahead, the white above-ground components
of the sleeve set come factory-prefixed at bottom end
of the parasol’s telescopic column.

JUMBRELLA model selected) suitable for being
bolted onto existing solid concrete ground by using
HILTI heavy-load bolts, or onto thick timber planks
by using heavy-duty coach bolts (e.g. DIN 603).
Footing devices are made of massive steel welded,
hot-dipped, and additionally powder-coated and
baked at >200° C in white (RAL 9016).
15 As characteristic as unparalleled worldwide is the
undetachable stainless-steel BAHAMA® brand plate
with the unmistakable serial production number
”SNR” durably engraved. Beside the current serial
production number which is not only compellingly
demanded by underwriters and leasing or, generally,
financing corporations, the SNR encompasses quite
a lot of factory-encoded data and parameters such
as the historical ordering, production and shipping
12 date, the orderer’s identity, shape & size of the
JUMBRELLA, and so forth. A factory-new replace-
ment membrane, for instance, can be verified by the
manufacturer only after he has been advised by the
client of the SNR of the parasol which the new fabric
part is earmarked for definitely.

15
Option 1: Bahama® »Print« – Promotional Jumbrella Structur

Promotional ultra-sized parasols, particularly heavy

weather-resistant JUMBRELLA models are made-to-
order custom structures inasmuch as the sectional cuts
of their (exchangeable) fabric membranes have to be
printed to the orderer’s digitally vectorized copy
material during the production process.
The BAHAMA® manufacturer’s printing capacities
encompass several basicly different fabric printing
methods. The answer to the question which one of
these will be applicable technically and, moreover, the
best cost-effective one is primarily depending on the
number of equal-shape & -size membranes inquired or
ordered to be printed to an equal branding pattern in
terms of image size, positioning, graphics, colour
separations, etc.
Whereas, for instance, the ”through-printing” method
[visual effect is transparencylike] requires a minimum
quantity of 100 to 200 fabric membranes (relative to the
required size & edition of the membrane to be
branded), the factory’s exacting multi-colour digital
ink-jetting system, even though – for reasons of the
machine industry’s current state of the art – limited to
print on plain white fabric ground only, is suitable to
print just one single membrane, or quantities from
2 up to 10 or 20 numbers. Unilateral screenprinting,
a third, more conventional printing method, can be
applied on any unicoloured fabric ground no matter
which shade but is costwise only reasonable with a
minimum production number of some 20 membranes
and beyond.

The optional, TÜV-certified BAHAMA® LIGHT 2

equipment requires permanent installation of the
JUMBRELLA in the »Universal In-Ground Sleeve« type
# 0451/E (# 1451/E). The TÜV-approved & certified,
factory built-in LIGHT is a non-retrofit equipment.
Consequently, it must be ordered together with the
JUMBRELLA structure to be equipped with. The TÜV
certification is subject to the condition that the docu-
mented LIGHT system is executed by using only certified
original components, and is installed and operated in
strict adherence to the respective technical specifications
recorded, approved & certified by the German TÜV
department concerned.

The optional equipment »TVR« (abbreviation of the

factory’s German designation of its system) allows to inter-
connect two [or more] square or rectangular-shape
JUMBRELLA units erected adjacent to each other by
means of a suitable textile drain-off gutter element.
Hence several same-size square or rectangular-shape
JUMBRELLAs can be arranged in row configuration.
However, the practical applicability of the connecting
fabric gutter element requires that folding frames of
the structures come premodified from the factory
(frame modification is a non-retrofit detail).
A row configuration of same-shape and -size
JUMBRELLA structures, particularly of those that
are to be footed and installed permanent, stipulates
beforehand that the ground slope along the common
centre axis in row direction must not exceed 0.5
percent (0.5 cm on 1 metre). In the event the given
on-site slope does exceed the said maximum rate, tops
of the in-ground footing components to be cast in
must uniformly be set either level or to a fictitious
0.5-percent slope even though both alternatives
would be contrary to the ”flush-with-finished-ground-
level” stipulation in the factory’s foundation drawings
coming with the in-ground components. However,
both of these ”way-out” solutions might be allowable
and practicable only on privately owned ground, not
on public like urban or municipal ground.
