We need more minorities on TV. There are hardly any.

The show Friends is well under 1% black,

Hispanic, Asian, and Indian. Friends is very white. And by the way--the show is set in New York
City. If you want to make a TV show that’s that white, don’t call it Friends and set it in New York
City. Call it Mormon Friends and set it in Salt Lake City.

I’m gonna start my own show called Friends, and its main characters will be Cesar Chavez,
Mahatma Gandhi, Confucius, Cleopatra, Mother Teresa, and Harriet Tubman. Well--I guess I got
a little carried away. I should have at least one white person on the show. Also, two of the friends
need to be siblings, like on the other show Friends. So, yeah. I’ll have Harriet Tubman and Ross
Tubman. Or maybe Mahatma Gandhi and Monica Gandhi.

The point is, we need more minorities on American TV. And fewer minorities in American
sociology textbooks. Have you ever looked through one of those books? 700 pages, tons of
pictures, two white people, 38 Peruvians, 43 Tajikistanis. If you read a book like that, and then
right afterwards you watch Friends, the contrast will be too much. It'll be like walking out to a
bright sun after being in a dark room. The lack of Peruvians and Tajikistanis on Friends will hurt
your eyes.

I think you know where I'm heading with this. We should take a bunch of sociology textbook
editors, and have them run TV networks.
