Down's Syndrome
It appears during the gestation of the baby, as a
chromosomal failure that occurs in the replica of
chromosome 21, causing instead of two there are
three chromosomes (trisomy 21). This extra
chromosome is what causes the problems when
developing the body and brain of the baby.
People affected by this syndrome have common characteristics that are due to the
lack or poor development of their body. The head is usually smaller than usual, with
small ears and mouth, flat nose and eyes tilted up, with possible white spots around.
The hands and fingers are also shorter than usual, and the muscle tone of the body
in general is much less than that of a person without this condition.
All these alterations make them more prone to suffer conditions such as congenital
malformations of the heart, dementia, cataracts in the eyes, gastrointestinal
obstructions, hearing problems, constipation problems, sleep apnea or
hypothyroidism.
They also tend to have problems with impulsive behavior, poor judgment, low level
of attention and low learning capacity.
They can also suffer depression, frustration or generalized anger by being aware of
the limitations of their condition.
There is no specific cause that determines why replication of chromosome 21
occurs, but there are risk factors that indicate a greater likelihood of occurrence.
Women over 35 are more likely to have their child born with this syndrome, a
probability that increases with age and if the couple had already conceived a child
with this condition previously.
In any of the cases, with the techniques of artificial insemination there are treatments
to select those fertilized ovules with better conditions to develop without problems.
Down syndrome can not be cured, but there are treatments to make life easier for
the affected people so that they can take as normal a day as possible.
From birth there are communities where different ways of adapting to the person can
be advised, strengthening those skills that may take longer to acquire. Some
examples of this are:
• Speech therapy: helps improve language skills.

• Physiotherapy: teach motor skills.

• Occupational therapy: to teach how to choose the right diet or usual tasks.

• Mental health care: to improve mood or behavior.
