Guy Fawkes: Did you know...?

Guy Fawkes was born at Stonegate in York on 13 April 1570 and was hung, drawn
and quartered in 1606 at Old Palace Yard in Westminster.

Fawkes left England in 1593 or 1594 for Flanders. He enlisted in the Spanish army
under the Archduke Albert of Austria. Fawkes held a post of command when the
Spaniards took Calais in 1596 under the orders of King Philip II of Spain.

November 5, 1605, Fawkes was arrested in the cellars of Parliament House.

When arrested he gave his name as John Johnson, the pseudonym he had used
throughout the plot.

In 1606 Parliament agreed to make 5th November a day of public thanksgiving and
ever since then the day has been celebrated with fireworks and bonfires.

Despite being involved in what is basically a terrorist plot, Guy Fawkes was named
the 30th Greatest Briton in a poll conducted by the BBC in 2002.

An uninhabited island to the north of Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos Islands is
named Isla Guy Fawkes, or Guy Fawkes Island.

St Andrew’s Day - 30 November

S t Andrew’s Day falls on the 30 November and represents a national day in Scotland
in memory of Scotland’s Patron Saint who was the first disciple of Christ. St
Andrew is also the Patron Saint of Greece, Romania and Russia.

St Andrew was born in Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee, and was the brother of St
Peter. They were both fishermen which led to Christ saying he would make them
“fishers of men”.

St Andrew’s flag, also called the Saltire, shows the diagonal cross on which it is
believed St Andrew was crucified, although its designer, William Porcher Miles, said he
changed it from an upright cross so that it would represent a more heraldic device than
a religious symbol. The blue background represents the sky, and the flag has been
incorporated into the Union Flag as well.

This day also marks the opening of the Christmas markets, and is connected with
Advent which starts on the nearest Sunday. It is traditional for girls to pray to St
Andrew, for a husband, at midnight on 29 November. It is said that St Andrew would
give a sign if the girl is to marry.
