Exercise 1: Installing Internet Information Services

Task 1: Verify prerequisites

1. Verify that the server meets or exceeds the hardware requirements.


a. On LON-SVR3, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
b. In Control Panel, click System and Security, and then click System.
c. In the Windows edition section, verify that the server is running Windows Server
2012 R2.
d. In the System section, verify that Processor is 2GHz and Installed memory
(RAM) is greater than 2GB.
e. Close the System window.
f. On the taskbar, click File Explorer.
g. In the left navigation pane of File Explorer, click This PC. Then right-click Local
Disk (C:), and select Properties.
h. On the General tab, verify that Free space exceeds 10GB.
i. In the Local Disk (C:) Properties window, click Cancel.
j. Close File Explorer.

Task 2: Install the web server

1. Perform a default installation of IIS.


a. On LON-SVR3, on the taskbar, click Server Manager.
b. On the Manage menu, click Add Roles and Features.
c. On the Before you begin page, click Next.
d. On the Select installation type page, verify that the installation type Role-based
or feature-based installation is selected, and then click Next.
e. On the Select destination server page, verify that Select a server from the server
pool is selected and that LON-SVR3 is selected in the Server Pool, and then click
Next.
f. On the Select server roles page, under Roles, click Web Server (IIS) role.
g. When the Add features that are required for Web Server (IIS)? Dialog is
displayed, click Add Features.
h. On the Select server roles page, click Next.
i. On the Select features page, click Next.
j. On the Web Server Role (IIS) page, click Next.
k. On the Select role services page, examine the list of the default Role services, and
then click Next.
l. On the Confirm installation selections page, click Install.
m. When the Feature installation has succeeded, close the Add Roles and Features
Wizard by clicking the Close button.
n. Close Server Manager.

Result: After completing this exercise, you should have verified the server configuration
and installed Internet Information Services (IIS).

Exercise 2: Verify the Web Server Installation

Task 1: Check for installation errors

1. Verify that the Windows Firewall settings for HTTP port 80 and HTTPS port 443 are
enabled.
a. On LON-SVR3, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
b. In Control Panel, click System and Security, and then click Windows Firewall.
c. In Windows Firewall, click Advanced settings.
d. In the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security window, click Inbound Rules.
e. When the Inbound Rules list is displayed, verify that the following rules have
been enabled:
i. World Wide Web Services (HTTPS Traffic-In)
ii. World Wide Web Services (HTTP Traffic-In)
f. Close the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security window.
g. Close Windows Firewall.

2. Verify that no installation errors occurred in the System log with Event Viewer.
a. From the taskbar, click Server Manager.
b. In Server Manager, click the Tools menu, and then click Event Viewer.
c. In the Event Viewer navigation pane, expand Windows Logs, and then click the
System log.
d. In the Actions pane, click Filter Current Log.
e. On the Filter tab, in the Logged list select Last hour.
f. For Event Level, click Critical, Warning, and Error, and then click OK.
g. View the events in the System log. Specifically look for events relating to the IIS
installation (other events may be present). Once you have confirmed there are no
IIS installation errors, close the Event Viewer.
h. Close Server Manager if it is still open.

Task 2: Test the default web site

1. Test the default web site.

a. On LON-SVR3, click Start, and then click Internet Explorer.


b. In the address bar, type http://localhost.
c. View the default webpage displayed by IIS.
d. In the address bar, type http://LON-SVR3.
e. View the default webpage displayed by IIS.
f. In the address bar, type http://192.168.3.53.
g. View the default webpage displayed by IIS.
h. Close Internet Explorer.

Task 3: To prepare for the next module

1. When you finish the lab, revert the virtual machine back to its initial state. To do this,
complete the following steps:
a. On the host computer, start Hyper-V Manager.
b. In the Virtual Machines list, right-click 10972B-LON-SVR3, and then click
Shutdown.
c. In the Shut Down Machine dialog box, click Shut Down.
d. When the virtual machine has completely shut down, in the Virtual Machines list,
right-click 10972B-LON-SVR3, and then click Revert.
e. In the Revert Virtual Machine dialog box, click Revert.

Result: After completing this exercise, you should have verified the proper operation of a
new IIS installation.
