CHAPTER I

The Problem and its Scope

Introduction

People nowadays share their thoughts and emotions through social media have

become an integral part of life for many people especially in Saint Augustine Academy.

Through social media people can express the highs and lows of their everyday life, and

can establish new friendships and break up old ones, share holiday and party pictures,

praise and complain about brands, idolize the achievements of their descendants and pets

through different social media sites – behavior which is strongly affected by emotions.

This study presumes that emotions are the driving force for posting content objects

especially on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and thousands of similar social

media sites. People are experiencing emotions are part of human existence. Although an

emotional experience begins as an internal private process, it can often leads to the social

sharing of emotions with others. Because sharing of emotions can provide help to the

people who are experiencing mental breakdown, seeking for attention, need help, want

someone to talk to, and adapt to social change. Across age, gender, personality type, and

culture, people share emotions with others in over 80% of all emotional episodes. The

reason for social sharing of emotions is that it allows the people to experience

interpersonal emotion regulation, defined as attempts at managing emotions through

social interaction. Emotions often affect people well after the initial emotion-generating

episode, leading people to share these emotions with others, particularly those which are

stronger and more salient.

However, people are increasingly sharing emotions with large and diverse groups

on social networking sites (SNSs), including tweets on Twitter and updating status and

commenting on others' timelines on the most famous website the Facebook. Motivations

for this form of sharing are diverse; one possible motivation that has so far received

limited consideration is that SNSs are good tools for interpersonal emotion regulation,

allowing people to reach both broad and targeted audiences depending on their needs

around a particular emotional experience.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to find out the cause of social media on the students feelings on

why they share their sentiments in the St. Augustine Academy Bayawan City Negros

Oriental specifically answers the following questions.

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 age;

1.2 gender; and

1.3 grade level

2. To what reason why students of St. Augustine Academy of Bayawan, Inc.

Post their innermost thoughts on social media in terms of:

2.1 depressions

2.2 loneliness

2.3 addictions

2.4 anxiety problems

Significance of the Study

This study will help us understand why students in St. Augustine Academy

participate and share via social media their emotions. There is considerable interest in this

topic because it can help us comprehend on how the students feel. As such, this study can

help share advice on people who are undergoing mental breakdown or depression.

However there are few studies related to the specifics of implementation.

Students

This study will help them reduce their problems.

Faculty

This study will help the teachers to reach out to their students.

Parents

This will help them control their children.

Researchers

The researchers aim to find how social media can affect how the students feel.

Future Researchers

This will help future researchers understand how social media can affect how the students

feel.

Scope of the Study

This study focuses on how social media applies to the students in this generation.

This study helps the students learn that there can be a positive effect when you share

emotions on social media. The main purpose of this study is to provide information

regarding to the effectiveness of the grade 10 students of St. Augustine Academy of

Bayawan Inc. This study considers the student’s personal information such as their name,

gender, age, and section.

The researchers limited the study to all grade 10 students of St. Augustine Academy

of Bayawan Inc. of school year 2018-2019. Each of the respondents will be interview and

will answer questions given to them. The students will come from different sections to

avoid prejudice of their perceptions.

Operational Definition of Terms

For the purpose of clarification, the important terms used in this study have been defined.

The following terms are: From the emotion of social media these are the following terms:

Emotions

- This refers as a traditional view that holds a small set of “basic” emotions and

defined as automatic, tightly-coordinated psychological, physiological and

behavioral that responds to a specific regularities of the evolutionary

environment, such as the need to escape from a predator (fear) or expel an

impurity (disgust).

Well-being

- Refers to the concept of “subjective well-being” or “happiness” from behavioral

economics and positive psychology, as well as to a broader portfolio of related

psychological outcomes like mental health and social support.

Social media, Twitter and Facebook

- Twitter and Facebook are part of a broad and constantly-evolving class of

Internet-based communications and entertainment services known as “social

media,” which allow people to establish connections and communicate with one

another and with entities like organizations and public figures who maintain a

presence on the services.

CHAPTER III

Research Methodology

Research Approach

This study used a qualitative design to examine the effectiveness of social media.

To define lifelong readiness in terms of life course taking patterns, including the titles,

perceived challenge level, and the number of years required to be professional, combined

with the experience received in training. In line with this, this research was conducted to

determine the factors affecting emotions, well-being and social media particularly

Facebook and twitter.

Our general objective is to look into the perspective of Grade 10 students to the

effectiveness of social media in St. Augustine Academy of Bayawan Inc. The researchers

are to find out the main factor why the students particularly the Grade 10 in St. Augustine

Academy of Bayawan, Inc post their thoughts and emotions on social media.

Research Design

This study used phenomenology approach to study the lived experiences of a

student on why they post their thoughts and emotions on social media. Phenomenology

approach aims is to describe the universal essence and it is useful in studying social

events. It talks about the natural events happenings on earth. Phenomenology approach

helps the researcher to study the students on why they post feelings and emotions through

social media.

Sampling Techniques

On this research, the researchers will gather data on the students who are very

active on posting their feelings were selected for the interview. Purposive sampling

method will be used in this study. The researchers targeted 5 students who they will

interview. All interviews were audio recorded so that the evidence of the interviews will

be kept and also the researchers will use memo in order to take some notes.

Research Respondents

The respondents of this particular research will be students who are actively

posting their feelings and thoughts on social media. Students from Grade 10 of St.

Augustine Academy of Bayawan Inc. are the respondents. The Age range of the

respondents is 15-16 years old.

Data Gathering Procedure

The way we collect our data is through interviewing the selected students. We

told them that this is a confidential interview, that their identity or any information about

them would not be exposed to the public. When the respondents will agree, we will

directly proceed in the interviewing them and at the time when they feel unease with our

questions we will ask them with much lighter and answerable questions.

Ethical Considerations

A research proposal was given to the researcher’s leader. Ethical approval was

given by the supervisor prior to the initiation of the research. In conduction this research

study, the researcher must be fully well-informed of the impact of their study to the

participants and on the society as a whole and must act accordingly. As this study was

conducted through an interview, researchers must ensure that all respondents are

willingly agreed to be a part of the said study and that they are allowed to withdraw from

the study at any time. Researchers gave consent from all participants and were also

reminded that they are under no responsibilities to answer any questions which they are

not comfortable with.

The researchers will take full responsibility of whatever result found of the said

study and may be held accountable for any harm it may cause. The respect for the

respondents should be given an importance by giving them full awareness that the

findings of the study may be published through any form of public and society

consumption or classroom as for relevance learning and for future research to take part on

various studies or activities.
